President Ford was a 3 time letter winner at Michigan back in the 30s. He also won 2 National Championships, a team MVP and has had his number 48 retired by the school.

RIP Mr. President. Your action to pardon Nixon saved this country a world of hurt and thus held it together for at least another generation. I know it was probably the major factor of you losing the 1976 Presidential race but many times doing the right thing requires sacrifice. You have been one of my favorites. RIP, President Ford and prayers to you, your friends and loved ones and to the nation as a whole.
That is correct with six living Presidents. Before that, I believe it goes back to Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Adams in 1825-1826. Adams and Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, fifty years to the day after the signing of the "Declaration of Independence". One a champion of the Federalists, and the other of the Democratic-Republicans, each died thinking the other outlived him.
God bless you, President Ford. Rest well.

Well, it wasn't before my time - I remember it well though I was quite young. Eisenhower was a FIVE STAR general (you don't see many 5 stars around)= a consumate leader, fantastic at dealing with difficult personalities (Roosevelt, Marshall, DeGaulle, Churchill, Stalin, Montgomery as well as the Russian Generals, Chang Kai Sheck - to name just a few). He was also president of Columbia University. He knew EVERYONE, had presence galore, authority, and intricate knowledge of people and policy.
He was an American icon - until he declared he would run for president as a Republican. Then he was labeled as "stupid" - not "in control." Can you imagine a FIVE Star not being in control?
If you go to the White House website you will find the bios for every president. Look up the accomplishments for the Republican presidents BEFORE they became president and it is VERY impressive - but they were all labeled "stupid" - "out of touch", "doddering", "asleep" - "someone else is in control" by the leftwing press and the democrat party.
But the democrat presidents are all brilliant: Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Carter, Clinton.
Roosevelt tried to pack the Supreme Court, gave us socialism, wouldn't lift a hand to bomb the rail lines to the concentration camps and save thousands of people and gave away Eastern Europe to the USSR. He was also not an advocate to allow the survivors of the death camps to go to Israel.
Truman - was a very down to earth president and I have nothing negative to say about him. He definitely was a leader.
Kennedy - botched invasion of Cuba, began upping the ante in Vietnam by sending in "advisors", generally did nothing about civil rights (it was Eisenhower who enforced school desegration).
Johnson: a consumate arm twister, enlarged the Vietnam conflict to a true war and wouldn't let the military win it. He was such a failure that he took himself out of running for president again.
Carter - gave away the Panama Canal, botched foreign policy with Iran completely, couldn't rescue the American hostages, ruined the military and killed our abilty to collect intel.
Clinton: impeached and should have been removed. At least the Republicans had the decency to stop protecting Nixon when it became obvious they could no longer do so. The dems had no such decency. They flocked to protect a man who knew no bounds of moral decency. They literally venerated his base and shameful conduct.
And all this vilification of Republican presidents of course complicit with the leftwing media.
We are left with the impression that it was Kennedy who was the hero of civil rights - but in fact it was Eisenhower.
Remembering and mourning a man of character and ethics next week will make quite a contrast to the Pelosi posse riding into town.
He received contract offers to play with the GB Packers and the DT Lions. He turned those down to attend Yale Law School. Of course, Pro Football back then wasn't the be-all-end-all of today. $200 per game. Sheesh.

Insofar as the Speaker and President Pro Tem of the Senate were also out of reach, Haig WAS in charge.
It was Jeff Goldblatt who was on duty in the news room. He did a decent job.

The guy was a determined, hard-working type. He was consistent and loyal.
At Michigan his "help" for college was being offered a job waiting tables and cleaning up dining rooms. No such thing as a football scholarship. He kept at it to pay his way through school and play football.
On the field his position was Center (I heard today that he went on defense at Linebacker as well...first time I knew that). Ahead of him was an upperclassman who was already a star and bonafide All-American. He had to wait 'til that guy graduated before becoming THE Center his Senior Yr. It was then he got true recognition and notice.
Imagine slogging away those yrs. playing behind another, in practice and on the bench, his star status from High School at South Grand Rapids but a dwindling memory, working at menial jobs on campus, until THEN.
Anybody like that, and with his athletic abilities, would have been successful in the Pros.
