He would've been a Hall of Famer in the NFL too I think.
The guy was a determined, hard-working type. He was consistent and loyal.
At Michigan his "help" for college was being offered a job waiting tables and cleaning up dining rooms. No such thing as a football scholarship. He kept at it to pay his way through school and play football.
On the field his position was Center (I heard today that he went on defense at Linebacker as well...first time I knew that). Ahead of him was an upperclassman who was already a star and bonafide All-American. He had to wait 'til that guy graduated before becoming THE Center his Senior Yr. It was then he got true recognition and notice.
Imagine slogging away those yrs. playing behind another, in practice and on the bench, his star status from High School at South Grand Rapids but a dwindling memory, working at menial jobs on campus, until THEN.
Anybody like that, and with his athletic abilities, would have been successful in the Pros.
