Who is Haig referring to when he talks about some men around Ford that he wasn't comfortable with?

He was before my time too. I've always thought a lot of him.

Love that photo, I know his passing will be difficult for them...

Any great books about President Ford and his life/presidency that you guys can recommend?

Was he the President who achieved the oldest age?

I heard LBJ, but I need to do some research.

God bless the Ford family and God bless Gerald Ford, a man of humility, humor and grace.

Like Cheney, Ford was a Cornhusker. Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska; Ford in Omaha.

I just answered my own question:

"Ford, who turned 93 on July 14, 2006, became the oldest president Sunday by living to 93 years and 121 days. The milestone is based on full days."

The date was Nov 12, so we can add 45 days (by my count -- can someone check me?)

"Reagan, born Feb. 6, 1911, was 93 years, 120 days when he died June 5, 2004. He had surpassed the longevity milestone of John Adams, the nation's second president, in 2001."

How sad it came from the place that hates both of these great men:

Well, it's been rumored that Haig was "Deep Throat", the informant that helped toppled Nixon. Ford replaced him almost immediately with Rumsfeld, who also brought in Cheney to the Ford transition team. Both were rising stars in the Nixon administration.

Just guessing...

"I'm in charge here at the White House" Al Haig WAS in charge there, at the White House.

We have to admit that after a President is shot, a Four Star General should not tell the world that he is in control.

In a third world we call that coup d’état.

We can chuckle about it now, but it unnerved many back then.

That happened on my birthday just as I had separated out of the Air Force. I was sitting at my in-law's house having the worst birthday I've ever had.

Well, it's been rumored that Haig was "Deep Throat",

You must have missed this:

But, in 2005, it was revealed in that W. Mark Felt, the associate director of the FBI, was Woodward and Bernstein's source. Furthermore, Haig was known to have been out of the country during some of the meetings between "Deep Throat" and the reporters.

I think deep throat was the former FBI Director W. Mark Felt? I couldn't see Haig being an informant though.

Remember the Mayagüez incident? President Ford was our POTUS then. May he rest in peace. I hope he had a wonderful last Christmas.

"The Mayagüez incident with the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia on May 12-15, 1975, marked the last official battle of the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War."

God will have a special place in heaven for Gerald Ford. The sacrifice he gave for this country as President was greatly underrated. His honest moderating tone helped calm this nation rocked with the Vietnam War and Nixon's resignation. When this nation was in an economic recession, President Ford turned the economy around. There was little to fault him for.

We offer our prayers to the Ford family.

RIP, Mr. President.

Gerald Ford ascended to the Presidency with practically no political capital and did the right thing by pardoning President Nixon and ending the Watergate circus.

My favorite comment from him was shortly after he took office: "I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln." His humble manner served him well in the work he did to restore the Presidency. Considering how difficult the circumstances were in August 1974 he did a fine job.

A Great American!

It kills me that the WashPost headline reads "Pardoned Nixon in the Wake of Watergate" - even in death the Post can't resist turning the knife.

Of course, if it wasn't for watergate, there would have been no Post, which was considered a backwater paper in a backwater town. Well, some things never change.

RIP GF. Your sense of decency, responsibility and integrity will be missed. And you handled defeat more graciously than any democrat ever has.

The statement made by Mrs Reagan is of course correct. Stem cell research does now and will in the future lead to cures and treatments for a variety of diseases. Since there is nothing in her statement specific to embryonic stem cell research, it is inappropriate to criticize her for something she didn't even say.
