Here we go. Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, has yet to take office, and already the ugliness begins.

Mr. Ellison plans to bring his Koran with him on Jan. 4 when he takes the oath of office. The Koran is the Muslim holy book. If Christians and Jews can bring their Bibles, why shouldn’t Mr. Ellison be able to bring his Koran?

The answer given this week by Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode was simple enough: Because Mr. Goode doesn’t believe in the Koran, Mr. Ellison doesn’t have any right to either. I kid you not.

What could be less American? Or less Christian?

In a letter sent to constituents, Goode wrote: “When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing-In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way.”

It gets worse.

“The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district, and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration, there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.”

More Muslims elected to office? More Muslims seeing our government as representative and fair? Is this a bad thing?

While I'm not convinced that Congressman Goode handled this perfectly, he raised a very interesting point. Americans don't like Islam and a recent Rasmussen Reports poll found that about 60% of American voters would NEVER vote for a Muslim, right up there with those who wouldn't vote for an atheist.

The Koran, unfortunately, has a provision in it that allows Moslems to lie to non-Moslems.

An oath sworn on the Koran is, of course, worthless to a non-Moslem.

He was elected because the MSM in that town(Minneapolis Star and sickle) refused to tell the people of his back ground. Namely, extreme antisemitism, support of cop killers and a generally extremist history. Had they known he would not of been elected even in this district.

It is frightening how much power the LSM still has.

But in the end, given the many alternatives that now exist to the LSM, you have to blame our fellow Americans for actually believing what they, in this case, didn't read in the LSM and putting us all in extreme danger. Last month they voted in many who will be even more dangerous than Ellison.

More Muslims seeing our government as representative and fair? Is this a bad thing?

Our bloated bureaucratic socialistic government in the modern age is barely representative, and often not fair. That fact aside, I seriously doubt that many Muslims are ever going to see it as representative and fair.

When the public is seeing all the world conflicts involving islamists it's not hard to understand why the majority have a problem with muslims. Secondly, their reactions to 9-11 and refusal to condemn the terrorists just adds to their problems..

Talk of bigotry is masking the issue here, on both the ill-meaning liberal side and even the good-meaning conservative side. Muslims need to be forced to take a stand. If they prefer Islam and all it's baggage to the American way of life then they need to go to a muslim country (and they can take liberals with them!). If they are American first and are wishing to stay in this country as Americans then they absolutely must stand up against radical Islam, even if they risk retribution from the radicals in their midst. And they've got to get thicker skins. Islam as law is incompatible with any version of the American way of life and muslims need to recognize that. We are at war, the enemy is among us and freedom isn't free.

Islam is a flawed religion... and by the actions of many of its followers... a death cult. Those of the faith who abstain from the actions of its fanatics... are often silent or even forgiving of the indescriminate bloodletting.

On the day Goode made these comments, I called his office with words of support. I learned all I want to know about Islam on 9/11.

Using a Bible to swear upon is a tradition, not a provision.
