ALBANY - Thousands of people left New York for other parts of the country last year, making it one of only three states that failed to grow since 2005, according to census estimates released Friday.
New York's estimated population on July 1 was 19.3 million, a drop of 9,538 from a year earlier, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. That drop is minuscule - 0.0005 percent - and based on estimates rather than an actual count. But census demographers say it shows New York's population remained virtually unchanged over the year.
New York and other Northeast states have suffered for years as residents - often young people just out of college - head to the Southwest and other high-growth areas.
The new estimates provide evidence that is still happening: 255,766 more people moved out of New York to other states than into the state between 2005 and 2006. Part of that exodus can be attributed to immigrants who came into the country through New York City and then moved on, often to areas with a lower cost of living.
But Robert Ward of the Business Council of New York State said it can be partly attributed to people heading to Texas and other states that are growing jobs at a faster rate.
People are moving elsewhere in search of opportunities that they're not finding in New York, Ward said.
The Census did not provide geographic breakdowns Friday. But population losses and jobs have been particular problems in upstate New York. Gov.-elect Eliot Spitzer has promised to place the upstate economy high on his agenda after he takes office Jan. 1.
The only other states to post population losses were Katrina-ravaged Louisiana, Michigan and Rhode Island. The District of Columbia also lost people. New York's neighbors all recorded growth under 1 percent.
The Census reported that the Northeast grew by 62,000 people.
E.J. McMahon, director of the fiscally conservative Empire Center for New York State Policy, said that other Northeast states did not lose people at the same rate as New York. He said New York and other states that lost people quickly tended to have high living costs (like downstate) and sluggish economies (like upstate).
McMahon said those problems can be addressed through policies to spur economic growth, like lower taxes and fewer mandates in New York.
You can't say 'We can't because it's cold and old,' because there are other cold and old places that are not shrinking like New York state.
We don't want you in Florida. Stay away.
Utah gets one and it won't be majority NY dems in that district.

Gosh, you can't tax and spend and regulate your way to prosperity??? Who knew?
When I am done with my military service in several years thy will be losing a family of 7 to a place where;
I am not taxed on every dad gummed thing,
Where I will be free to talk on the phone in my car,
Where my payment for my house will once more be higher than my tax bill for my home,
Where I will not pay twice on some taxes,
Where I sell things on E-Bay and the nazi tax thugs wont say I owe them money for things I sell
Where I will be able to not be forced to pay for unon thuggery at the stete level
Where I will not be subjected to 24/7/365 hate ad's against anything conservative on TV and Radio
And a whole lot more.
Up State NY would be a wonderful place were it not for its government which legislates against the people 24/7/365 and where the republicans ensure that it will stay that way because the ones at the top for the GOP are just as bad.
I resent that these people have ruined one great state, and I will leave it first opportunity.
True, but you're still causing our taxes to rise. Ten years ago our property taxes equalled 2 WEEKS of pay. Today, it's 2 MONTHS for the same house and same job. We don't have the $$$ and are going to have to do some fast scrambling to get the taxes paid this year. We've always had illegals but the change is this new influx of northerners.
basically it seems the people who the government expects to tax into paying for the "gimme free stuff" citizes are fleeing. The irony is that NY tries to do a last gasp income tax on those who flee for the entire final year.
Eventually who will be left for the politicians to tax?
Will Detroit Blight spread?
Did it ever occur to you that maybe some of those people moving south and west might have direct experience with what doesn't work and could be helpful in preventing you folks from making some of the same mistakes ????
Bumper sticker slogans don't automatically equal wisdom.
There is a lot to learn from success and just as much to learn from failure.
2 less to vote for the piaps!!!
Well, lets see...
In Texas what do you pay for a 2400 sq. ft. home in taxes???
I get the joy of having $6,800 CONFISCATED from me with more taxed on all local purchase items (between 9 and 10%) as well as the gas costing us more than nearly anywhere AND taxes only go UP with all politicians spending any "surplus" on their pet projects (meaning anything that keeps them in office).
If I were you, I would stop complaining and get you and your friends down to your leadership in Texas and apply the breaks and demand proper planning. Here in NY you can not plan, you pay off enormous costs in permits and still get told you can do nothing wizout ze state approval! This is a nightmare state.
I am wiloing to be the worst of the states are NY, CA, MD, RI, MA, CT and NJ. I am sure a few others will tell us of how ugly it is in their home state, but the problem will only be solved by the states citizens rising up against the tyranny of the idiots we have allowed to be elected by our own inaction.
Honestly it can also be partially attributed to some people cashing in their real property in the Northeast and reinvesting in less expensive real property in other regions.
If a Northeast homeowner can sell his/her home for $500,000-$1,000,000+, they can sure have a nice pile of cash to buy a spread in many other parts of the country with plenty of $$$$$ left over.
This story peps me up a bit...
and just in time for Christmas *<[;o)))~
Wanna borrow my 2X4? LOL
" ...realize that red states will be picking these seats up and it starts to look better."
UNLESS they change the state blue by maintaining the political views and voting patterns they exhibited before.
I live in Garland (a close suburb of Dallas, texas)and pay a property tax of roughly $2000 a year plus an 8% sales tax
I have TWO words for you..RENT CONTROL
The idea is WE DON'T WANT TO DO IT THEIR WAY. Too many want to move here and tell us how we need to raise taxes so as to provide for the "cultural benefits" they're so used to. And, then, tell us how we ought to change our ways where guns are concerned. That is not welcome here as far as I'm concerned.
Hers the hoot for me...I live 50 miles from Albany. 50 MILES!!!! In the hills...in the country...and I pay $6,800. The state of NY is tyrannical with taxes.
Do you understand what I wrote ????
I agree that some people want to change things for the worse but there are some people who understand what hasn't worked because they have lived through it. They tend to be Conservative and only a fool wouldn't at least consider their experiences and what it means. It doesn't mean you have to implement their ideas and thoughts but it would be pure folly to simply disregard them because "they ain't from around here".
I certainly don't want to believe that you are so egotistical and closed minded that you won't even listen to what others have gone through and try to get some benefit from their experiences, successes and failures.
I live in Nashville, in a more or less inner city area, and what we get are New Yorkers who want to re-create their culture here. Trust me - they are not conservatives in my part of town. I do see your point and I actually grew up further North, but it's been 20 years here for me. The other thing I see is how these closed-minded lefties want to us us about race relations. If you were to look at the county-by-county "red/blue" map of Tennessee, it's mostly red except for the blue in Davidson and Shelby Counties (Memphis), so my attitude probably reflects that.
...that means that leftists are migrating to parts of the country where freedom still reigns. You know they'll demand all their stupid ideas wherever they go. :(:(:(
