Solstice rite held early at Stonehenge
Dec 22, 2006
LONDON, England (UPI) -- Around 60 people turned up to celebrate the Winter Solstice at Stonehenge Thursday - on the wrong day. After negotiating with site managers, the crowd performed traditional solstice activities and left peacefully.
One reveller, who wished to remain anonymous, said: 'We formed a ring and held hands, and touched the stones. The man with the green cloak was there. But there were an awful lot of red faces,' she said.
The Pagan Winter Solstice celebration is one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world. Because the Summer Solstice occurs on June 21, they assume the Winter Solstice occurs Dec. 21, but it actually occurs Friday at 0022 GMT. Another crowd is expected at Stonehenge Friday morning.
Stonehenge is currently competing against other iconic structures from the Statue of Liberty to the Great Wall of China, in a global poll for the New Seven Wonders of the World. The poll is organized by the Swiss-based New7Wonders and the winners will be announced in July 2007.
Last year, permission was refused for a new visitor centre at Stonehenge but English Heritage plans to appeal the decision. It also said the much-needed improvements were now subject to a government review as a result of cost increases.

The article said they touched the stones, but I thought they put a fence around Stonehenge and didn't allow people to touch the stones anymore? Did these people have special access?
he got a red face after he got his stones touched.
Yeah...
I think it IS Bea Arthur and the cast from that liberal '70s sitcom "Maude."
Didn't the show "Maude" do an episode featuring Wicca and human sacrifices?!?!
lol
And the man who drove them out was Mayor, later Congressman, and soon to be out of work Curt Weldon.
They must have utilized their magical powers of levitation to go OVER the fence...
OR
they rode in on their broomsticks.

I need a copy.

Since the winter solstice is the point when the sun is at its greatest distance from the equatorial plane (according to the story, occurring just past midnight on the 22nd) revelers there on the evening of the 21st might have been closer to the correct time of the solstice than those that arrived on morning of the the supposed correct day of the 22nd.
Yup...
Here is the cast at the link:

Bea Arthur (aka "Maude") played "Ackmena"
Since this was the Star Wars Holiday Special, I have to assume that the holiday they were "specializing" was the Winter Solstice (or maybe Kwanzaa!)
This is just too sad. It's like a Jew not realizing the Sabbath starts the day before. OTOH, I often forget exactly which day Easter is (of course, the churches can't agree either, so I don't feel so bad).
I think you can find many bootleg DVD on Ebay. Enjoy!
I believe it aired around Thanksgiving.
That's ok - Christians celebrate Christmas on the wrong day.
Ackmena
Alternate Names: none
Actor: Bea Arthur
Description:
Ackmena is a cantina bartender trying to make ends meet by serving drinks to the exotic alien clientele, but she finds the Empire can be bad for business. She is assisted by her short sidekick friend and a bouncer named Tork. Cantina patron Krelman is in love with her, but Ackmena claims she has no time for such things.
Details:
Ackmena's cantina is one of a number of cantinas found in Mos Eisley. Unlike Wuher, the surly bartender at the Wookiee Chalmun's cantina where Luke and Ben met Han and Chewie, Ackmena is a lot more personable with her patrons, even lending them money or helping them out from time to time. There is some crossover in clientele between the two cantinas, and Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes have been known to play at both venues.
Quote: "Come back soon, I'll be waiting!"
They open it for the fruitbats, who have some kind of permit.
Decades ago, there was no fence, but people abused the place by bashing hunks off the standing stones-For Magyck, or just to be ugly.
We were there, one solstice.
Too bad MST3K isn't around any more.
This would be a great show for them to rip on.
We still have "Manos: The Hands of Fate"...... ;)
Stupid hippies...
