For serious fun. The one on the first page you see is the SOCOM II (also .308). It's a pretty serious battle rifle. The National Match is here.

AR-15,.........varmint gun.

You know what's amazing? I can take that varmint gun, put handloaded Hornady 75gr A-Max bullets in it, and hit a 6 inch circle 90% of the time at 600 yards. If you don't believe me, find a local gun club that's having a "across the course" NRA highpower rifle match and see what experts can do with iron sights.

BTW, I hold the USAF Distinguished Riflemans Badge #300. If you don't know what that is, google it.

The AK-47 is the perfect weapon to give to uneducated cannon fodder, (aka peasants, arabs, viet-cong) for human wave and insurgent ambushes where the idiots are too stupid to learn how to really shoot.

Sorry about that, but this is one time the ruskies won.

Stop! You're killing me! I'm laughing myself to tears over that statement. Do yourself a favor. Go to a NRA highpower rifle "over the course" competition and watch what professionals can do with a real rifle. Pay close attention to the 300 yard rapid fire prone and 600 yard slow fire prone. You might just have an attitude adjustment.

"you can hit a pie plate at 100 yards every time with a bad AK, and you can hit a coke can at that distance with a good AK."

I agree. I've owned an AK-47 for 25 years and I can hit water filled milk jugs at 150 meters all day long. Now if my Ruger Mini-30 could only do that.

At one point I didn't bother to clean my AK for five years. I never got a hiccup. Mine also has a very light trigger pull. However, I do think that getting an accurate AK-47 with a decent trigger is sometimes just a matter of luck. I've seen a lot of scope mounts advertised for AK-47s and I've always wondered if they really work at all. I'm more of an iron sight guy myself. The AK-47 is a great fun gun... inexpensive, cheap ammo, simple to operate, and lots of after market toys to "accessorize "with.

Well, here's a case: first it's an AK-47; later it's a legal gun

And best of all, after the smoke of this story cleared, we found out (in small print) that the man who owned the thing was a convicted felon. So, OK, he gets to go to jail all over again in addition to parenting classes.

The press chose to not see the importance of this part of the story.

Now that National is a prudy gun! It just LOOKS like a shooter!

My Savage 111F has the syn stock (went for the value gun) but I just love the look of a wooden stock in a more 'traditional' looking firearm whether for hunting or military.

You got a value too. The Savage 111s are excellent rifles, they could ask more for them, but want to keep them affordable. How do you like the AccuTrigger? I have one in .270 that I like a lot.

How do you like the AccuTrigger?

Just picked it up last Monday so I have not fired it yet but the trigger feels nice. It is tight with zero creep. Feels like it is set at about 2.5 lbs for a light but not 'sneeze' pull. The 'lock' that must be taken up before you get to the trigger is 'non-existent' as far as feel.

I bought a Puma 44 Mag in stainless as well. Need to shoot these!

I put a Williams peep sight on my milled Bulgarian AK and it made a world of difference in accuracy.

>>6. Sights suck totally. However, aimed fire beyond 50 meters is futile, anyway.

Agree with the first. The second is hyperbole.

Pistol ammo?
7.63X39mm round is pistol ammo?
Who knew?

7.62x39 isn't pistol ammo (unless you use it in a pistol chambered for it). You must be thinking of the 7.62x25 Tokarev

Half the price and a slightly longer barrel. There's also enough add-ons for the SKS to make it as useful and handy as an AK.

I've got a couple SKS's (in addition to my AK's) and I like them, but there is one thing that keep the SKS from being "as useful" as an AK in my book, the inability of the "Half the price" SKS's to accept interchangeable magazines, unless they are heavily modified. You have to pay as much for one as you would for an AK to get one that will allow you to do that.

Most of those weapons are modified quite a bit, and so is the ammo. They are great for target shooting, but in the real world as a close-in battle rifle they come up short against the AK which was designed for that specific purpose.

Each design has it's merits, but just because a weapon has an "eastern bloc" design heritage is no reason to discount it completely. It is the height of arrogance and ignorance.

A number of years ago, they sold a Chinese SKS carbine with a short barrel that uses an AK removeable magazine. I got one for $130. new.

Incidentally, commercial bullets for reloading the 7.62 x 39 are generaly .310"-.311" in diameter, as opposed to the 7.62 x 51's .308 diameter.

For some beauty pics, see "Fun with Automatic Weapons" at http://karl.linn.net/

I don't know what you mean by interchangable magazines. Do you mean magazines which will fit AK's and SKS's?

I didn't go that route. I just bought some fairly inexpensive SKS magazines for my SKS.

I'm looking for another SKS to buy. I want the same type and model I had before. This will be the one with the spike bayonet and shorter barrel. The ones I have seen imported lately have a blade bayonet and some sort of long flashhider which I don't particuarly like.
