A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.

Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.

According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.

The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.

Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.

Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.

"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month …You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying…I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.

The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.

"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.

They need to be dissed once in a while.

They and their corrupt refs stole the State Basketball Championship from my HS.

But maybe I'm starting to get over it. It was 1954, after all.

Since we've nabbed the "Lone Wolf", I guess the war's over. What a relief.

Cripes, that ain't right. I need them to wait until mid-April to end it so we can properly celebrate! ;-)

A Muslim convert who talked about his desire to wage jihad against civilians was charged Friday in a plot to set off hand grenades at a shopping mall during the Christmas rush

If this was the plotline in a Hollywood movie or an episode of "24," CAIR would be raising holy hell by now. I can't wait to hear their statement condemning Derrick Shareef for inciting "Islamophobia."

I'm guessing that the focus of their hissy-fit would be at the reporter who dared to disclose such "irrelevant' information.

I know that the reason why more U.S. muslims don't speak out against the jihadists is that they will get kicked out of their mosques or worse, but history is full of Christian martyrs who died horribly because they wouldn't renounce their faith.  All the anti-jihadist muslims would need to do is to form their own 'truly peaceful' sect which openly renounced terrorism.  That would create a magnificent upheaval in Islam and might even do some good, bringing the Reformation that Islam needs.

Oh wait, for real-life events they will get out their script that says, "he is not a real Muslim!" Don't blaaaaaaame us! Waaaaaaahhhhh! Allah fubar!

CAIR is nauseatingly predictable. They probably don't even need to produce new press releases when this sort of thing happens anymore....they most likely have a boilerplate copy that they can fax out at the moment there's an indictment against one of their scruffy little jihadists.

A lovely speciman....Bush needs to give a speech along the lines of Tony Blair,,....see this:

BBC: Conform to our society, says PM ~ UK's Tony Blair speaks of Tolerance...

Including something like this:

Mr Blair also used the speech to announce a crackdown on funding for religious and racial groups, saying in the future they would have to prove they aimed to promote community integration.

Sounds like a homegrown muslime.

When will we wake up and criminalize this vicious ideology?

Rockford is famous for me because the hottest woman I ever dated was from there, and she knew the guys from Cheap Trick.

The Wilson WATT Puppy is arguably the greatest set of speakers ever.

My only problem with Wilson Audio (aside from the price tag) is that they are hediously ugly.

Here is Dave Wilson with the WAMM 7a, costing $225,000...

Talk about ugly!

I don't think there is anyway to overcome the WAF on those things. Though if you can spend $225,000 for speakers, you have a enough money that WAF is of no worry.

The more likely scenario, and the reason they do not do it, is because too many Americans are armed and the outcome would probably quickly lead to (after several "events") some kind of open season on anyone suspected of being remotely affiliated with such groups.

In Texas and smaller areas, you are right. In more liberal big cities it would lead to mass conversions to Islam.

First, Rockford is NOT suburban Chicago. It' at least 80 miles northwest of Chicago near the Wisconsin state line. The Cherryvale Mall IS in Rockford (actually it's in Cherry Valley, IL). Secondly, if this jerk is referring to the DeKalb County courthouse, it's in Sycamore, IL; not DeKalb. I suppose the word 'County' could have been left off the above statement, but it reads true as stated above based on the jargon.

We live in Rochelle, IL. My wife works in DeKalb, and she's planning on going to the Cherryvale Mall this evening. I'll ask her to watch for 'loonies' hanging out near garbage cans.

Agreed, and hopefully people in hearing and visual range will be serious enough audiophiles that they would let the beauty of the music be their primary impression.

If I were in that income bracket and had to make a choice between a super-expensive car and a truly hotrod hifi like this, I would choose the latter in a heartbeat.  Great music touches my heart far more than a V-12 engine (although it would certainly be nice to have both)

Greetings from Rochelle, Rubber_Nose. It seems the AP sure doesn't have a clue about 'Fly Over Country' geography.

"Backyard Islamofascist" Ping!

Is a thwarted terrorist plot a short sixty miles away from home close enough for your comfort? How about if a guy just like this one wants to pull off something like this at East Towne or West Towne or upscale Hilldale Mall? Who's gonna stop him?

Remember how AG contenders Peg (The Keg) and Kathleen (Loser) Falk (both D, WI) actually derided JB Van Hollen (R, WI) during the campaign when he even wanted to TALK about these "lone wolf" Islamofascists and the carnage they want to commit against INNOCENT Americans?

Agreed wholeheartedly.  That reference in the article I posted is an indication of the lack of sophistication of  CNN (as if examples of their lack of sophistication were hard to come by) and I chose that particular article because it not only mentions the WAMM system but also Wesley Snipes, which I thought would amuse some here today  :-)

They are nothing but a marketing juggernaught with a beyond sub-par product that for some reason sells very well. Thanks to their marketing I assume.

I don't think you'll find Bose gear in any true audiophile's home....perhaps in a kid's bedroom.

We lived and worked in Sycamore for years. Now it's DeKalb for the wife. I'm retired.

bcsco,

I knew that there were other Freepers around here.

Maybe the AP reporters are frightened of cornfields.
