Lt. General Michael DeLong discusses intelligence behind U.S. concern over Ansar al-Islam terror/poison camp in Northern Iraq

A recent conversation Lt. General Michael DeLong revealed new information on prewar intelligence on Iraq that has received little, if any, public attention thus far. General DeLong was the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command during the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and was directly involved with the pre-invasion preparation for Operation Iraqi Freedom. He offered the observation that Bush administration officials appear to have been reluctant thus far in explaining the prewar intelligence and evidence tying members of Saddam Hussein’s regime to the al-Qaeda-linked Ansar al Islam terrorist group.

Wow. Look at all the filthy little Rat death-lovers applaud themselves. All they need is a proper set of uniforms. With lots of swastikas.

I Thought that as well and gave it some thought.

What BSNBC probably means by that is that once the US established the No Fly Zone Saddam did not have control of the camp.

He wrote it in his book, told PBS and now told me. It's reliable that he's saying it.

I want to see the original intel. Why isn't it being made public?

Thanx for the ping.

Have you ever come across any information about a meeting in Beirut, January 2001?

I bookmark this CNN article ages ago:

http://archives.cnn.com/2001/US/02/12/terror.meeting/

Andrea Koppel was covering the State Department at the time the piece was written, so I assume the unnamed officials she used as her source were in the State Department. It was written before 9/11, so it probably wasn't big news when it was written, but looking at it now it seems like it should have been huge news.

Not only this but in 1998 and 1999, Clinton was beating the Iraq war drums. The media went out of their way to find the ties between Osama and Saddam.

I guess these people think that all people have only short term memories. This site is very interesting.

Yes, Iraq was holding meetings like that in Baghdad as well. The media has very selective memory about that stuff.

He offered the observation that Bush administration officials appear to have been reluctant thus far in explaining the prewar intelligence and evidence tying members of Saddam Hussein’s regime to the al-Qaeda-linked Ansar al Islam terrorist group.

There's probably two main reasons for this.

1. As far as Iraq's contact with members of an AQ-linked group, it was really no more or less than any other Arab/Islamic country, from Morocco to Pakistan to Indonesia. There is a lot of contact between these nations and indigenous terrorist groups, running anywhere from outright patronage to just keeping an eye on things.

2. The contact Iraq did have with Ansar al Islam was to use them to harass the Kurds, who were protected by our no fly zone. AAI was a bad group of dudes, but they had no more to do with us than Jemmah Islamiyah (AQ linked in Indonesia) or the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (AQ linked in Algeria).

The links between Saddam's regime and "AQ" sounds ominious at a casual glance, but no serious analyst thinks there's anything to it. That's why you won't hear anyone from the Administration try and sell the case today. The facts aren't there, and what is there isn't as significant as it looks at first.

Just wait. There's plenty more. You'll see.

Why? Sit around and wait for threadbare Saddam/sorta AQ conspiracy theorists to get their act together, while Iran hosts the IRGC, the Special Forces of Islamic Terror, as well as Hizbullah? Or while Pakistan, which is a nuclear power, has ISI ties to every terrorist group in it's borders (including people who have flown planes into our buildings). The guy behind the Bali bombings served a whopping 2 years in prison because of the Indonesian government, and you're worried about what if scenarios from Iraq?

The Iraq/sorta AQ links are ridiculous in light of the actual government/Islamic terrorism links in our world.

From my files (hope all the links still work):

In in 1998, an Arab intelligence officer, who knows Saddam personally, predicted in Newsweek: "Very soon you will be witnessing large-scale terrorist activity run by the Iraqis." The Arab official said these terror operations would be run under "false flags" --spook-speak for front groups--including bin Laden's organization.

Then there were the predictions by an Iraqi with ties to Iraqi intelligence, Naeem Abd Mulhalhal, in Qusay's own newspaper several weeks before the attacks that stated bin Laden would “demolish the Pentagon after he destroys the White House and ”bin Laden would strike America “on the arm that is already hurting.” (referencing a second IRAQI sponsored attack on the World Trade Center). Another reference to New York was “[bin Laden] will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra everytime he hears his songs.” (e.g., “New York, New York”) which identified New York, New York as a target. Mulhalhal also stated, “The wings of a dove and the bullet are all but one and the same in the heart of a believer." which references an airplane attack.

The Arabic language daily newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabic also cited the cooperation between Iraq, bin Laden and Al December 1998 editorial, which predicted that “President Saddam Hussein, whose country was subjected to a four day air strike, will look for support in taking revenge on the United States and Britain by cooperating with Saudi oppositionist Osama Bin-Laden, whom the United States considers to be the most wanted person in the world.” This info is in the link provided below. How could these people have had foreknowledge without Iraq being involved?

Source for this info

Warning...slow loading .pdf file. This was from a lawsuit filed against Iraq after 9/11...the court ruled against Iraq.

There was also another lawsuit filed by the family of John O’Neill (a former FBI agent who captured Ramzi Yousef after the 1993 WTC bombings) after he died in the WTC on 9/11. His personal files from his years of traveling around the world investigating al-Qaeda are were used as evidence in the lawsuit. The evidence includes documents unearthed in the headquarters of the Mukhabarat (Iraq's intelligence service) and information gleaned from the interrogation of both al-Qaeda and Iraqi prisoners. (Link below). It also quotes Vincent Cannistraro, the former CIA counter-terrorism chief, who stated in October 2000 that Iraq had been wanting to carry out terrorist attacks, and that the Iraqi military had been in contact with Osama bin Laden.

We know from these IIS documents that beginning in 1992 the former Iraqi regime regarded bin Laden as an Iraqi Intelligence asset. We know from IIS documents that the former Iraqi regime provided safe haven and financial support to an Iraqi who has admitted to mixing the chemicals for the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. We know from IIS documents that Saddam Hussein agreed to Osama bin Laden's request to broadcast anti-Saudi propaganda on Iraqi state-run television. We know from IIS documents that a "trusted confidante" of bin Laden stayed for more than two weeks at a posh Baghdad hotel as the guest of the Iraqi Intelligence Service.

Abu Nidal, September 11 and Saddam The terrorist network may be closer knit than we think.

Followed up with a 10-day tea sipping hunt by that 'yellowcake' hunter in the land of Niger way back in February 2002????
