Navy rejects San Francisco for warship commissioning ceremony

SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Navy has rejected plans to commission its newest and most powerful warship in San Francisco because of concerns that the city doesn't support the military.

Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans this week for a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island in San Francisco, said retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of the citizens' commissioning committee.

Instead, San Diego will host the ceremony in which the crew formally takes charge of the ship, Myatt said.

Navy leaders were concerned about San Francisco's refusal to offer a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, as well as the school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in city high schools, Myatt said.

Some city politicians also have publicly criticized the Pentagon. In one instance, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval said national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard."

Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.

The last ship to be commissioned in San Francisco was the frigate McCampbell in the summer of 2002.

I would add to your list the USS Missouri. I was on the committee to bring MO to SFO. We got no support from Feinstien, Boxer, Dellums, The Chron, or any other congresscritter. Knowing what I know now, I'm glad she went to Hawaii.

It's actually more appropriate for her to be in Hawaii, since the war with Japan started there, and ended on the deck of the Mighty Mo.

Beaufiful ship.

I have a stupid question: what is it in the mission or size that determines the designation 'frigate' -v- 'destroyer' -v- 'cruiser'?

I asked because I noticed that Arleigh Burkes displace 9200 tons and are around 508 ft in length, almost the same as light cruisers during WW II. Ticonderoga-class cruisers looks similar to Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, in shape and size as well. What differentiates them?

I was a Navy destroyer sailor in the 1980s and what I can tell you about my ship is that it had two screws (propellers) driven by two 1200 psi steam driven turbine engines.

The frigates that I saw in the 80s were single screw ships. Frigate were a bit smaller than destroyers, but like destroyers they are highly maneuverable on the ocean. Many of the frigates as well had a helo deck with a helicopter as well.

My ship, a Charles Adams Class guided missile destroyer, was capable of performing anti-sub operations (through our sonar and ASROCs) as well as anti-aircraft tracking and such with our twin harpoon missile launcher.

Here...I'll attach a photo or two of my ship, the USS Robison DDG-12.

BTW...cruisers are much larger ships and while I was never on one, I understand that a cruiser will typically serve as the "eyes and ears" of a fleet battle group through the use of its AEGIS system. If other ships in the battle group also have AEGIS (like the newer destroyers) the cruisers will typically lead the other AEGIS capable ships and serve as point or the clearinghouse for all incoming tactical info.

The federal government should remove ALL federal facilities from San Francisco, including the mint they have. Even the F.B.I. office should be removed from the city limits. Th en not even the schools would receive "extra" funds for educating the children of federal employees.

If Frisco, grants "amnesty" for illegals, and still has on the books the policy of not seeking/arresting deserters from the military (when feinstein was mayor), then frisco should not receive any federal funds, school or tobacco tax money....
