Navy rejects San Francisco for warship commissioning ceremony
By: Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Navy has rejected plans to commission its newest and most powerful warship in San Francisco because of concerns that the city doesn't support the military.
Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans this week for a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island in San Francisco, said retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of the citizens' commissioning committee.
Instead, San Diego will host the ceremony in which the crew formally takes charge of the ship, Myatt said.
Navy leaders were concerned about San Francisco's refusal to offer a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, as well as the school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in city high schools, Myatt said.
Some city politicians also have publicly criticized the Pentagon. In one instance, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval said national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard."
Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.
The last ship to be commissioned in San Francisco was the frigate McCampbell in the summer of 2002.

Maybe if they ever name a ship after Bawney Fwank it can be commissioned in Than Franthisco.
Maybe they'll decide to pull the USS Constitution out of Boston too.
All the seamen they can dream of...
But San Frandisco would make a great bombing range.
Finally!
The Village People are said to be deeply saddened by this.
The Navy was mistaken? I don't think so. If Bay Area citizens care about this, then it's up to them to vote the limp-wristed politicians out.
Let's not kid ourselves. Many major cities are redefining American norms so that there are only regional norms. Sanctuary cities are another example.
If you think San Fran is unique, look at Puget Sound and how they treat the military, particularly the people of Bainbridge Island Wa.
Park the Iowa over the horizon and bombard the sh*thole for a week.
Thank you.
I think it is still somewhat confusing in the article. I thought that maybe "Makin Island" was a place somewhere near SF where the commissioning ceremony was tentatively planned. The article should have also identified the class of ship and her hull number.
It's been quite a while since I have been in SF and I do not know the geography there at all.
The name of the warship is right in the article: the Makin Island.
Think of it as a sign of support for pro-American elements in the area.
HOOAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Makin Island was a battle in the Pacific during WWII.
Much as I love to see the Navy pushing back, they should never forget that the military in this country is subject to civilian control. If the military does not like civilian authority, the very last thing we want is them taking matters into their own hands.
I know this is a silly little flap, but you always want to be on the lookout for that camel's nose under the tent.
I'm sure they might...after all I believe it's still a commissioned warship.
That's true. About a year ago I moved back to Los Angeles after living 2 years in San Francisco. The thing you notice is that though pro-American, pro-family, good Christian folks are hard to find, when you do come across them, you find them to be some of the strongest, morally and intellectually sound people you'll find anywhere. You kinda have to be strong and smart if you're gonna be a conservative in San Francisco, otherwise you'll get eaten alive and end up joining the liberal "group-think" up there.
