I thought that maybe "Makin Island" was a place somewhere near SF where the commissioning ceremony was tentatively planned.

Makin Island was a battle in the Pacific during WWII.

I just went to one of the links provided by a FReeper posting and read the background about the new ship.

The USS Makin Island will be a fine namesake for the Marines who fought and died in that WWII battle.
