Navy rejects San Francisco for warship commissioning ceremony

By: Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Navy has rejected plans to commission its newest and most powerful warship in San Francisco because of concerns that the city doesn't support the military.

Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans this week for a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island in San Francisco, said retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of the citizens' commissioning committee.

Instead, San Diego will host the ceremony in which the crew formally takes charge of the ship, Myatt said.

Navy leaders were concerned about San Francisco's refusal to offer a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, as well as the school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in city high schools, Myatt said.

Some city politicians also have publicly criticized the Pentagon. In one instance, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval said national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard."

Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.

The last ship to be commissioned in San Francisco was the frigate McCampbell in the summer of 2002.

If they are going to name a ship after Bawney, maybe it should be a "Ferry" Boat.

Guess you can tell that it's been awhile since I was there. I hadn't realized that *everything* was shut down.

Since the military bacon's no longer going there, what kind has Nancy been able to bring home?

I didn't know they had named a ship after Commander McCampbell. It is a richly deserved honor. My Dad was a pilot in VB15, the dive bomber squadron in Air Group 15, throughout the time Commander McCampbell was Air Group Commander. Quite apart from his personal bravery and his amazing record as a fighter pilot, Commander McCampbell was revered by the men in his air group. He was a "commander" in every sense of that word.

The Village People are said to be deeply saddened by this.

Well, those that survive, maybe. According to some website, their producer/impresario has died of AIDS, one member has also croaked, and another -- the sailor guy -- became a career criminal and is on the run from the law.

Pretty much sums up San Francisco. If God ever wants to give the world an enema, the tube goes there.

The idea that the problem is the Navy's "perception" of San Franciscans' anti-military values is pretty laughable. That perception is dead on.

Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.

Well, those political leaders WERE elected by the majority of Bay Area citizens!

I'm glad that the Navy is finally fighting back against the craziness in San Francisco by taking its activities and money elsewhere.

I would add to your list the USS Missouri. I was on the committee to bring MO to SFO. We got no support from Feinstien, Boxer, Dellums, The Chron, or any other congresscritter. Knowing what I know now, I'm glad she went to Hawaii.

They did - they said since the aircraft had weapons onboard they can prevent them from leaving. It was here on FR where I read about it.

Hey dog, haven't seen you since the last PW counter against the Hezzies in Balboa Park.

I can't believe they considered the commissioning of the
Makin Island in Frisco since there is no military there.
Most are here in San Diego as this one will be as we are home to the largest Navy and Marine bases and the ship will be homeported here.

Next week Nasco ship yard here in San Diego will launch
the "Allen Shepherd" in a series of huge dry cargo-ammo ships for the Navy.

They'd have to fire pretty near vertical to make the shot.

Have to settle for the 5" guns then, unless they put some distance between them and San Fagsisco.

About frickin' time!! The military [and the Federal government] ought to stick it to San Flamer every chance they get. Cut off the perks, cut off the funding wherever possible. Let those Marxist wannabes sue in Court for every penny.
