Navy rejects San Francisco for warship commissioning ceremony
By: Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Navy has rejected plans to commission its newest and most powerful warship in San Francisco because of concerns that the city doesn't support the military.
Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter vetoed plans this week for a commissioning ceremony for the Makin Island in San Francisco, said retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt, chairman of the citizens' commissioning committee.
Instead, San Diego will host the ceremony in which the crew formally takes charge of the ship, Myatt said.
Navy leaders were concerned about San Francisco's refusal to offer a homeport for the retired battleship Iowa, which would be turned into a museum, as well as the school board's decision to abolish junior ROTC training in city high schools, Myatt said.
Some city politicians also have publicly criticized the Pentagon. In one instance, Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval said national defense should be left to "the cops and the Coast Guard."
Myatt said the Navy had mistaken the views of some political leaders for the views of the majority of Bay Area citizens.
The last ship to be commissioned in San Francisco was the frigate McCampbell in the summer of 2002.

I'm surprised they didn't refer to it as a "battleship".
Still this is good news.

Yeah...thanks.
I just went to one of the links provided by a FReeper posting and read the background about the new ship.
The USS Makin Island will be a fine namesake for the Marines who fought and died in that WWII battle.

They should play "In the Navy" (Village People) with loudspeakers topside as the USS McCampbell patrols under the Golden Gate.

You know, the Iowa's guns can reach 24 miles using a full 16" shell...
i wonder how far SF city hall is from the dock...
Well, if they aren't certain of the distance, a few thousand ranging shots until they zero in on the target certainly couldn't hurt.
It's not like they would be firing on innocents in ANY sense of the word.
A joke people, lighten up!

They also banned GI's from deplaning at SF International on their way back from Afghanistan ... made them sit in the plane until refueled and then departed .... I'd drive to Reno to bypass SF ....

There is nothing wrong with SF that couldn't be solved by a 9.0 quake. Whoa there partner, not so fast. There are a lot of really nice folks and true conservatives in San Francisco as well as a hefty group of capitalists. Them strange folk have claimed the community but are killing their young before they are born reducing their birth rate to less than zero. In 20 years or so we will have them outnumbered.

San Fran wants the money the military contributes to their economy and what would that be? fleet week? There are no military bases in San Francisco that I am aware of, I do not count recruiting stations.
To: rhombus
Why? While liberal, Boston is not hostile to the NAVY or Coast Guard presence there.
To: Calvinist_Dark_Lord
They'd have to fire pretty near vertical to make the shot.

San Francisco would rather have H.M.S. Pinafore with an all male cast.

I'm sorry, but I disagree. There are only two types of people in San Fran. The wicked majority and those who chose to raise their young their presence.
When I came to this realization in 1999, I sold my home in Santa Rosa, and moved my family to Alaska. Been there, done that. Hope you have good earthquake insurance.
On a side note, I think they should cancel the commisioning ceremony and spend every cent that would go toward wine, cheese and travel expenses for all the brass and buy fuel and ammo. Send her to the gulf and give her a proper commissioning.
