Until recently, many children who did not conform to gender norms in their clothing or behavior and identified intensely with the opposite sex were steered to psychoanalysis or behavior modification.
But as advocates gain ground for what they call gender-identity rights, evidenced most recently by New York Citys decision to let people alter the sex listed on their birth certificates, a major change is taking place among schools and families. Children as young as 5 who display predispositions to dress like the opposite sex are being supported by a growing number of young parents, educators and mental health professionals.
Doctors, some of them from the top pediatric hospitals, have begun to advise families to let these children be who they are to foster a sense of security and self-esteem. They are motivated, in part, by the high incidence of depression, suicidal feelings and self-mutilation that has been common in past generations of transgender children. Legal trends suggest that schools are now required to respect parents decisions.
First we became sensitive to two mommies and two daddies, said Reynaldo Almeida, the director of the Aurora School, a progressive private school in Oakland. Now its kids who come to school who arent gender typical.
The supportive attitudes are far easier to find in traditionally tolerant areas of the country like San Francisco than in other parts, but even in those places there is fierce debate over how best to handle the children.
Cassandra Reese, a first-grade teacher outside Boston, recalled that fellow teachers were unnerved when a young boy showed up in a skirt. They said, This is not normal, and, Its the parents fault, Ms. Reese said. They didnt see children as sophisticated enough to verbalize their feelings.

This nation is going to die from rot, we won't have to be conquered.
My God.
Remember the good ole days when a degenerate was called a degenerate? Of course I speak of the NY Slimes.
No doubt those same young parents, educators and mental health professionals will do their damndest to make sure that any five-year-old who claims that he wants to be a fireman or cowboy when he grows up gets steered towards the fireman or cowboy track in all of his schooling. NYC already has special schools for children exhibiting alternative gender identities - so, where are all the special fireman and cowboy schools?
"Cassandra Reese, a first-grade teacher outside Boston, recalled that fellow teachers were unnerved when a young boy showed up in a skirt. They said, This is not normal, and, Its the parents fault, Ms. Reese said. "
And those teachers were right. It is the parents fault.
Child abuse.
The queers have an interest in this, since most male children who have a predisposition to dress as the opposite sex grow up to be queer. It's all part of their evil agenda. And, they increasingly have the support of the law. Yes, this country is going to rot away from within.....
Basically a queer mouthpiece, and so has the Miami Herald become an extremely queer-friendly paper.
Any boy who thinks he bit different is ripe for sexual predators. The schools will encourage this and probably supply the predator.
Recruit them while they are young. Easiest time to convince them they are born that way and just be who they are.
Gender Identity Rights? WTF? is this? Damn I miss the 80's.

I demand the right to be in the girls lockerroom! 7th grade would have been more interesting.
LOL you aint kidding!!
What liberals declare to be normal is still considered to be insane by at least 75% of the population. There is still hope.
These groups come into the public schools, and put articles in teen magazines, and voila! the kids have discovered something new and exciting about themselves, and this is a 'concern' that needs to be addressed.
And, of course, if the child wants to be a soldier, I'm sure they'll embrace that, too. ;-)
