Al Qaeda cyber-terrorists target Wall St

Wall Street was braced for a terrorist strike on financial websites last night.

Sources at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security believe Al Qaeda will try to hack into sites used for online stock trading on the New York markets.

Intelligence agencies have picked up 'chatter' on intercepted phone and radio links used by Al Qaeda operatives calling for disruption to start today.

Online stock trading is a multi-billion-dollar-a-day market used by investors all over the world, including those in Britain. Last night, a financial expert warned traders to be extremely cautious today.

They should double check all buying and selling activity to ensure deals have been completed.

The warning highlights the threat that 'cyber-terrorists', backed by a group with the financial resources of Al Qaeda, might pose to world markets.

If Al Qaeda hackers break the codes that guard the stock trading sites they could disrupt the money markets by, in effect, halting commercial transactions. This could do enormous harm to western economies.

U.S. intelligence has no hard evidence to support the warning.

But it believes senior Al Qaeda operatives made multiple calls yesterday ordering their supporters to start the cyber attack. The operation is thought to have been planned for months.

According to some intercepted calls the plot is a retaliation for the imprisonment of suspects at Guantanamo Bay.
