Three Atlanta police officers were shot and wounded and an elderly woman killed at a house in northwest Atlanta Tuesday night.
The woman, identified by relatives as 92-year old Kathryn Johnson, opened fire on the officers from the narcotics division at a house at 933 Neal Street, according to officials. Authorities say they received a tip of drug activity taking place at the home and officers were headed to the house with a search warrant.
The woman's niece, Sarah Dozier, says that she bought her aunt a gun to protect herself and that her aunt had a permit for the gun. Relatives believe Johnston was frightened by the officers and opened fire.
Her relatives say Johnson had lived in the house for about 17 years.
"They kicked her door down talking about drugs, there's no drugs in that house. And they realize now, they've got the wrong house," Dozier said. "I'm mad as hell." Officials say they had the correct house and that the warrant they had was legal.
Assistant Chief Alan Dreher says the officers had a legal warrant and "knocked and announced" before they forced open the door. He said they were justified in returning fire when they were fired upon.
Dozier said there were never any drugs at the house. She says her aunt must have panicked when the police forced their way into the home.
She says the officers "shot her down like a dog."
The plainclothes Atlanta Police officers were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. One officer was struck in the arm, one officer was struck in the shoulder and one officer was struck in the thigh. All are expected to recover.
Or simply title all of your articles, Anna Kournikova Sues Tabloid over Nude Photos (yes, pictures at link!).
You'll get more hits. :O)
Is that chair floating in thin air?
She missed center of mass on all three, but she scored points.
Not to mention that a startling number of cops are just plain incompetent and or poorly educated. No beef against cops that aren't -- I know a couple in our neighborhood and they are fine men (Simi Valley PD).
But when I lived in LA County, one of my friends was startled by the cops breaking down his door one afternoon. Turns out they had the wrong "address".
Guess how long it took for him to get the door paid for?
The physics are against you in that direction. You can get rounds off faster and more accurately if you work with the muzzle climb rather than against it. May I respectfully suggest that you try "balls, heart, head" rather than the reverse?
I am glad actual cops are weighing in on this issue - what is your analysis of the situation, as reported?

So says HER FAMILY!
And the police say they do not have the wrong house. So you are taking her families word against the police.
Chief Calls Shooting of 92 Year Old Woman "Tragic, Unfortunate"
ATLANTA -- Three Atlanta police officers were shot and wounded and an elderly woman killed at a house in northwest Atlanta Tuesday night.
The woman, identified by relatives as 92-year old Kathryn Johnston, opened fire on the officers from the narcotics division at a house at 933 Neal Street, according to officials.
Atlanta Police Asst. Chief Alan Dreher said at a news conference Wednesday that an undercover officer made a drug purchase at Johnstons address late Tuesday afternoon from a male suspect. Officers were able to obtain a search warrant after that.
Asst. Chief Dreher said as they were executing the search warrant, the officers announced themselves and then forced open the door. Officials say the warrant was a "No Knock" warrant meaning that the officers did not knock before forcing open the door, but they did announce themselves.
Dreher said as soon as the officers forced open the door, Johnston shot at the officers and the officers returned fire to protect themselves. One officer was shot 3 times once in the leg, on the side of the face and once in his bulletproof vest. One officer was hit in the leg and another hit in their arm. All officers are on paid administrative leave pending an investigation as is common.
Officials say they have not made any arrests in the case and they have not located the male suspect. Dreher said suspected narcotics were recovered from the home but they are awaiting lab results to confirm the items are drugs.
Dreher said a marked patrol vehicle was parked in front of the residence and the word "Police" was written across the front and back of the narcotics team's vests. He also said only a matter of minutes passed between when officers arrived on the scene and when they forced open the door.
Asst. Chief Dreher referred to the incident as a "tragic and unfortunate incident".
The woman's niece, Sarah Dozier, says that she bought her aunt a gun to protect herself and that her aunt had a permit for the gun. Relatives believe Johnston was frightened by the officers and opened fire.
Her relatives say Johnston had lived in the house for about 17 years.

She says the officers "shot her down like a dog".
Police say the investigation is continuing.
I thought there was more to this story than was being told.
The raid was done at 1:00 AM based on a "tip".
Tell us your address. We'll find out how "stupid" you are.
My guess is that it still isn't.
They just tear stuff up, they don't fix it.
I would rather hear the 92-year-old woman's version, but she seems to be unavailable for comment.
Cops should wear uniforms and drive marked vehicles.

If they were all uniformed (including the one supposedly buying drugs), and were all in conspicuously marked vehicles, I would be okay with everything but knocking the door down at 1:00 AM and killing the 92-year-old lady.
What?
Of course, but your way is crueler....he watches his balls get shot, doubles over, takes another in the chest on his vest, then gets one on the top of the head.....
It's a simple sentence and a simple point.
I can't simplify it any further.
My apologies, I was just trying to digest your statement that the undercover cop making the drug buy should be in uniform.
