Dem Agenda: Draft Gays

Some members of the new Democratic majority are laboring hard to live up to the stereotype of their party as unserious about national security. One of them is Rep. Charles Rangel of New York, chairman-designate of the House Ways and Means Committee, who has revived the idea of military conscription "as a way to deter politicians from launching wars," according to the Associated Press:
"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.

What Rangel is really proposing is conscripting young adults into civilian government service. This would seem to run counter to the interest of public-sector unions, an important Democratic constituency, which perhaps is why other members of Rangel's party aren't rushing to embrace the idea

Meanwhile, a pair of Massachusetts Democrats are tackling another pressing national-security issue, reports the Boston Globe:
Representative Martin T. Meehan, a Lowell Democrat, said he plans to hold congressional hearings early next year of the House Armed Services Subcommittee [on oversight], which he is likely to chair, on a bill that would allow homosexuals to serve in the armed forces. . . .
Meehan's proposed change was backed yesterday by Representative Barney Frank, a Newton Democrat who is openly gay.

This is one article you really need to read in order to get the entire story.
You should also be advised that if you do this, you might find it wise to have a barf bag handy.

But-but-but aren't draftees SUPPOSED to be the restive, boorish malcontents that can't seem to get anywhere in society, and are fit only for cannon fodder? Now here comes Charlie Rangel, all ready to throw an important constituency of the Dem'crat party under the bus, as if he believed the civilian homosexuals were fit only to be segregated from the rest of the civilians, and thrown together with the absolute scum of society.
Then they would forced to go out and kill people and break things.

What Representative Meehan wants is a change that would allow openly homosexual members of the military. That is exactly what Clinton first sought before settling for the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that was adopted.
So far, the majority of Democrats and Republicans have opposed Rangel's suggestion.
It must be noted the loss of the draft necessitated allowing women in combat roles, and the relaxing of prohibitions against homosexuals under President Clinton. It is also worthy to note it was Democratic former Senator Sam Nunn that led the opposition to Clinton's original plan to allow openly homosexual men and women to be part of our military. Sam Nunn wanted no exceptions made for homosexuals. He was vehemently opposed to allowing homosexuals in the military.
Speaking only for myself, and in direct opposition to both Democrats and Republicans, I would have preferred the draft had never been abandoned to allowing women in combat roles and allowing homosexuals in the military.

First the Democrats want gay marriage and now they want gays to be conscripted. Why do the mean Democrats keep on wanting to impose slavery on the poor homosexuals?

Ummm, Meehan, you moron, gays are already serving in the military. The issue at hand is with improper sexual behavior, something which the military is quite strict, be that straight or not. I served with gays and lesbians, we all knew who they were but it mattered not, they never plastered their gay lives in our face the same way we didn't plaster our straight lives in theirs. It's called mutual respect!

the writer is too polite to say that Wrangel is proposing the draft to take care of the human deritus that is his constituency. Wrangel wants government jobs for the lazy uneducated slugs that can't get jobs not drug related.
