Mike Duncan is one of the finest individuals the Republican Party and the Commonwealth of Kentucky has ever produced. He SHOULD be the new RNC chair, but in typical Mike fashion, he does not want to be the "up-front" guy, he wants to be the behind-the-scenes manager. And he will be a brilliant one.
In the late 1970s, Mike was president of the Kentucky Young Republicans and I was chairman of the College Republicans. While I have never been close to him personally, I have followed his political and business career with great interest. I recommend that you all read more about him. He is an unusual person with unusual ability, integrity and honor.
The main thing you need to know about Mike is that he is one of the chief architects of the modern Kentucky Republican Party. In the 1970s, when we were starting out, the Kentucky GOP held only one Congressional seat, no statewide offices, no Senate seats, and only 8 of 50 seats in the state Senate. Today, in no small part due to Mike Duncan's work, Republicans hold both U.S. Senate seats, 4 of 6 Congressional seats, the governorship, and the state Senate. Mike is a tremendous party builder. He knows how to take a party from minority to majority status.
Here is a link to an article that will show you the other side of Mike. Even while he was concentrating on his business, building a community bank in a small Kentucky mountain town, Mike was a great public servant and mentor to dozens of people.

Too bad he wouldn't consider a run for President.
McCain are Guliani (sp) are social liberals.
We have enough of that. That's destroying our country. I refuse to vote for more of it - no matter what!

I'm sure Mr. Duncan is a great guy but the GOP needed a fresh new face. Michael Steele would have energized the party and been a great spokesman. Also, Steele would have gotten people to at least listen to a different viewpoint who would have otherwise not bothered.
It appears the Republican party has lost it's way.

What happened to Martinez?
Yesterday his name surfaced as the new RNC leader.
Did that lead balloon fall flat?

He has been a delegate to the 1972, 1976, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 Republican National Conventions... But not 1980 and 1984 (or 88)? That omission is troubling.

Mike is a tremendous party builder. He knows how to take a party from minority to majority status. Republicans already know how to do that. We need someone who can show them how to govern from the right like they were elected to do and keep a majority.

A good enough resume.
But will he help to interfere in state primaries (Laffey vs. Chafee)? Will he try to defeat conservatives (Graf, Toomey vs. Specter)?
The GOP had better realize they hurt themselves very badly when they took people's money and used it for the Specter and Chafee campaigns. And when they meddled in primaries, ran ads to defeat conservatives in primaries and then, if the conservative won, announce they would never do anything to help them get elected.
The RNC just plain sucks. They have a lot to do to repair their image with us. We won't forget and trust them with any money until we see a thorough change and repudiation of all these things they have done to the state parties and to conservative candidates.

This is a great post and informative. I thank you for posting it. It adds to the level of knowledge.
Mr. Duncan sounds like a fine individual and what he did in Kentucky is impressive. Most of what you say about him in Kentucky is great. Can you tell me what he has done in Washington? Does he bear any responsibility for what happened in the election last week? I ask because I don't know.
I still wish there were someone at the RNC who can be an effective spokesperson.

There will be many challenges in court in 2008. Martinez has 25 years experience litigating. With Martinez and Duncan, the Republican have a strong legal team at the top.

Is Mike Duncan for the President's and the U.S. Senate's amnesty for illegal immigrants legislation? If yes, then I'm fully against him!

He's a good man. I've had occasion to meet him, several times in fact, and he always came across as modest but very confident.

Why didn't they name him to head RNC -- I think he will do a very good job but so much so I think he should be fully in charge.

He needs to really get some name recognition and FAST! Nobody knows him. I never heard of him until two weeks ago. He sounds good, but he should start hitting the airwaves so that he could win.
