Democrats to 'revisit' law creating border fence By Shaun Waterman UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL November 11, 2006 Democrats will look again at the legislation mandating 698 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border and might seek to scrap the plan altogether when they take control of Congress next year. Rep. Bennie Thompson, Mississippi Democrat, told reporters this week that he expected to "revisit" the issue when he becomes chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee in the 110th Congress. Mr. Thompson said the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) new border enforcement program, known as the Secure Border Initiative or SBI Net -- which includes monitors, cameras and other integrated surveillance systems -- is a viable alternative to fencing. "We might do away with it, or look at [integrating it into] SBI Net," he said. "A virtual fence rather than a real one."

"My suggestion a fence around DC nothing goes in or out for at least a year."
I prefer ten years, it's the only way to be sure.

I can hear thousands of cheering Americans greeting this decision with a unanimous "BUENO !"

why don't you stop acting like a jerk? Uh I have a clear coinscience. I did not vote for a candidate that would vote for open borders pelosi to be Speaker, as others I surmise on this thread did.

I too voted "R" knowing full well that the fence would never be built. I wasn't duped that day. I was self deluded, into thinking that perhaps the "Compassionate Conservative" would at least be conservative. And after all he wasn't Gore or Kerry.
That said, I have been and continue to be quite saddened by George W. Bush's presidency. As hard as I try and reconcile those feelings, I just keep coming up short. Even with the "after all" he wasn't one of them argument. Not that I ever wanted one of "them".
Our political system, while still the best in the world, is in a sad, sad state.

Bush is wanting to end his last 2 years with peace and bipartisanship, so his legacy will be improved.
He will give the Dems nearly everything they want. All he wants is 2 remaining quiet years [and 'comprehensive immigration', of course].
[Some of the radical Dems may have other ideas, however, and may continue to rub like sandpaper.]

No genius here. You are the only one that has ever existed.
We don't need to go down this road again. Been there before and I for one don't intend to go there again with you. But thanks for trying once again.
Have a great day.

I've reached the point with Bush where I don't care if they impeach him next year or not. I'm that disgusted.

The fence bill was a major tactical mistake by the Reps. It gave the Dems cover prior to the election. Even Hillary voted for it.

I was a candidate this year. I ran in a district where I had been Chairman of The Republican Party the previous year. As Chairman, I had led the efforts in our county to elect the first Republicans to defeat D incumbents in 150 years. This year I ran on a platform of Tax Cuts. People responded "Yea right." I had no money and very little help. I got spanked 57 to 43.

Nice non-explanation in trying to explain why the democrats now want to defund 3.3 billion dollars from a previously passed bill.

The next time I vote for a Republican, I'm going to insist on a lot less "compassion" and a lot more conservatism.

You worked hard for the democrats who are now going to defund the barrier.
There was never a funding mechanism in the bill. It wasn't going to get built, and everyone involved knew it.
And don't even start on me - I voted a straight "R" ticket, and drug everyone I knew to the polls to do the same.
But the so-called border fence was written to be DOA, the moment it passed, and GW, whom I personally like a lot, had a great deal to do with it.
To: Dane
The only bright spot would be that the newly elected Dems would have to go on the record against the fence. I doubt that this will come up. The Dems want to consolidate their gains. They will shy away from controversial issues and direct their immediate attention to minimum wage increase, tax credits for college tuition, and changing the AMT laws [Rangel mentioned in today's WP that is his #1 priority].
The Dems now set the agenda, so they call the tune on what will or will not be discussed. Welcome to the brave new world for those who don't remember what the House was like prior to 1995.

Oh, I know the feeling, but really don't want any impeachment. It would be devistating to our Nation in a time of war. And make no mistake about it, we are in a life and death struggle with Islam.
I too am frustrated to no end with the man but not the office he holds.
