President Bush yesterday said he will team up with Democrats to pass an immigration bill with a guest-worker program that his own party blocked this year, and his Republican opponents predicted a bloody intraparty fight but said they cannot stop such a bill from passing.
"We will fight it, we will lose. It will go to the Senate, it will pass. The president will sign it. And it will happen quickly because that's one thing they know they can pass," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican and chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, who had led the opposition to a guest-worker plan. "I am absolutely horrified by this prospect, but I have to face reality."
Mr. Bush supported a bipartisan majority in the Senate this year that passed a broad immigration bill including a new worker program and citizenship rights for millions of illegal aliens. But House Republicans blocked those efforts, calling them an amnesty, and instead forced through a bill to erect nearly 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.

I will say it again. You are all insane. This would be akin to impeaching Nixon. Since most likely Cheney would be impeached also,Who do you want sitting in the President's chair-Nancy Pelosi? You think we lost and election badly this year? This is not an uncommon midterm election. Try impeachement and lose power for a generation. It is time to stop being whiny babies and move on. Let's do what we can.
It won't happen. Bush is not an obstructionist, and congress is a bunch of ninnies. The idea that if the Repubs lost, they would fight harder is nonsense-no silver linging. We are going to have swallow some upleasent medicine. I only hope those who sat home or voted for loosertarian candidates are happy.
It wouldn't do any good to impeach Bush...it would only hurt Repubs. Cheney would go too. Who is in charge then?
Maybe and maybe not. As I remember back in the early 90s the Republicans in the Senate filibustered just about everything Clinton and the liberals tried to ram through. They stopped that socialist agenda cold.
PING!
Yep, those conservatives who stayed home really did us a favor here...NOT!
The Bush Betrayal continues...
Huh? President Bush has always been big on getting this pushed through...anyone who voted for him in 2000 or 2004 was voting for a candidate who was very up front about this. To call it "betrayal" is unfair to the man, IMHO.
Why would those who voted for Libertarian candidates be happy? They lose either way--with the Republican Nanny-Statists or the Democrat Nanny-Statists.
They will discover what losing really means with Dems in power.
Very.
DITTO
However, the candidate running against him wanted the same thing. We were screwed no matter how we voted, because even McCain wants an open border.
Are you certain he thought Tuesday was a bad day? Maybe he actually got what he wanted in order to get through this piece of legislation he knew the conservative GOP Congress would not pass... otherwise, why didn't he announce Rummy several weeks ago, but more, why did he specifically say just prior to the election Rummy was going to be there two more years?
Clinton over-reached in a big way. This allowed Repubs to get elected in 94. If Clinton had a Democratic majority for most of his two terms, he would have gotten more. Also, the Dems have been out of power for 10 + years. They will force through their agenda. Clinton wanted to get elected again, in some instances, he backed down. Pres. Bush will not do this.
The 90's were not that good by the way. We stopped some inititives, but we still have liberal judges who wreaking havoc on our judiciary.
My God if it didn't resonate, where were these people last year when we had streets choked with hispanics, many illegal, marching and saying how they wanted Reconquista? Our dumbed-down educational system has ruined this country when people know more about Britney Speers and KFed than illegal immigration and what it is costing our society.
If they get amnesty they should not get voting rights for 20 years.
AMEN! When they start the "hearings" on everything they want to, I'll be egging them on!!! Don't you dare, W!!!
Staying home is NEVER the answer. I have NEVER stayed home from an election, nor have I EVER promoted or espoused that LOSING tactic. To lose when we have given something our all and our best is one thing. To lose intentionally is beyond idiotic, it's wrong.
You know that isn't going to happen. BTW, the President made a point of saying he discussed immigration with Dirty Harry and then Harry said they discussed immigration. Why do I think we all got the shaft in thir mornings meeting?
I have voted in every election since I was old enough to vote, including all primaries as well as State and local elections... I also don't believe in sending a message to 'teach a lesson' and one time in my life I erred and voted for Perot and will never repeat that mistake again. A vote for third party is a vote for the other side.
