Defeated U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., refused to concede Wednesday saying there remain votes yet to be counted in his tight race against the declared winner, Democrat Jon Tester.
Burns, who has not commented to reporters on the race since the votes were counted Tuesday night, released a statement at 1:47 p.m.
Jon Tester ran a good race and has the lead right now, but it is extremely close, Burns said. The state of Montana has a process in place, and it is our obligation to see it through. There are still votes out there that deserve to be counted.
I believe we need to continue to let that process play itself out, and there is no need to rush to a conclusion when votes are this close.
As of mid-afternoon Wednesday, the unofficial vote count showed Tester with a 2,847-vote lead, with all 867 precincts reporting. Here were the totals:
- Tester, 198,302 votes, for 49.1 percent.
- Burns, 195,455 votes for 48.4 percent.
- Stan Jones, Libertarian, 10,324 votes for 2.6 percent.
Only two kinds of ballots had yet to be counted Wednesday afternoon, said Bowen Greenwood, a spokesman for Secretary of State Brad Johnson.
People who went to the polls Tuesday, but forgot to bring some kind of identification, were able to cast provisional ballots.
Those ballots will only be counted if the voter returns today with proper identification by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Greenwood estimated that about 1,000 provisional ballots were cast Tuesday.
Also, the office will continue to count ballots coming in from Montanans serving in the military overseas for a few days after the election.
Greenwood said it was impossible to know how many of those may come in.

Perfect slideshow!! Looks just right. I would post a Whipped Cream gif but it might be a bit 'much'!!
Thanks!
Now AlQaeda, HAMAS, Hezbollah, CAIR have all endorsed the democrat party candidates and are celebrating their victory
First target next to be the NYT...
A vote for the Republican and a vote for the Libertarian seem to have both been equally thrown away, since both lost.
That must make the dems really proud!
Sadly, it probably does.
Well put, and I agree.
I laughed at the rats who complained about the Nader Greens in 2000, so I'm not about to whine now just because some selfish idiots wanted to "send a message". Besides, I'm pretty sure most of those "libertarians" are only shamed Democrats anyway. They were raised Democrat and wouldn't vote for a Republican under any circumstance. I don't believe for a second that they cost Burns this race.

LH
The problem is that in this form of government, the time to vote libertarian is in a party primary.
If you _really do_ have libertarian values, you belong in the R party and should want the R party to win. It gives you a bigger voice and the chance to push your party.
Christian Coalition, after Robertson's loss, could easily have become a 'third party' but instead they took root in the R party and then, in time, dominated it.
Libertarians were cracked in the radiator with the steam coming out of their ears from their brains.
Thank you to the 10000 Losertarians.
Maybe if the GOP actually followed their principles, this wouldn't have happened.
Military ballots not counted.??
Correction:
Military ballots not counted AGAIN!!!!!!
If the article is correct, Burns is toast. There is no way to sugar coat it. 1000 provisional ballots and an unknown number of late-arriving military ballots simply isn't enough.""
A few errors here IMO:
1. You are believing the media, who never seems to support a Republican.
2. ALL BALLOTS deserve to be counted. If you are an absentee voter due to your job, etc, how does it make you feel when "your ballots are not counted"??? Provisional ballots due to address changes, etc, also deserve to be counted.
3. Not counting the military ballots is a severe slap in the face of the men and women who are volunteers in the armed forces, and are placing themselves in harm's way so that YOU can vote, but then they are denied the counting of their votes? SHAME!!!
Burns may still lose, but ALL the ballots need to be counted. When you dismiss any ballots, you set yourself up to dismiss all ballots, IMO.
The rules of the road are that your ballot shall be counted. It is a rule--not just a SUGGESTION.
Some are young and stupid. Some are government employed and attached to Democrats for their pay and so forth.""
You have just described ALL of the District of Columbia and alot of major cities in the USA.
Burns not ready to concede

"You libertarians are losers and retards. And by the way, please vote for us."
That about right?

Nope. It's more like this: Your hearts are largly in the right place, but you're usually far too short-sighted. You've hurt your own cause by effectively throwing the election to the Democrats. Voting Republican would have kept things closer to where you want them than they are now.
Forget that voting Republican helps Republicans; it also helps the libertarian cause way more than strengthening the Dems does.
Very long shot.
