The most important thing that Republicans should learn from tonight is that America is a representative democracy.
This does NOT mean that your congress critter shares ALL your beliefs, or that he is a perfect human being, but rather that, in general, he votes the way you want him to.
It's like hiring a lawyer. You may despise his personal life and his principles, but what is important is that he WINS YOUR CASE.
Democraps could care less about the morals of their elected officials as long as they win.
Republicans could learn a lesson here...
I did not think we were going to lose at all. I am reading so many conflicting reports about the final tallies, I can not be sure whats going on. I am heart sick that Americans are so stupid as to let the dems back in control. I feel for Iraq..they are doomed.
Of course there is. But it the combination of things that climaxed tonight does not change, it will be a long time before Republicans gain the House back.
Republicans, from Bush on down, need to go strongly to conservative values. And the cut and run voters? They are immature, cowardly, selfish little punks.
Oh, and as far as Reagan's second term not accomplishing much? His speech of 1987 at the WALL was one of turning points of history. If he had done nothing else, THAT was more than most Presidents do in their entire time in office.
And Reagan NEVER abandoned his conservative values.
Americans are not stupid. It is a sad night though
Dare I say it: Rove you (not so) magnificent bastard!
Hastert is going to win, but he'll be out of the GOP leadership.
Considering the extent to which the House districts are gerrymandered it's increasingly obvious that the Democrats opened a big can of whupass all over the GOP.
Maybe we should send them all a copy of the Contract for America.
The big issue is IRAQ. That is the reason I voted Demo this time whereas I voted republican before. All the lies the neo-cons spewed out to get use to attack IRAQ leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. And for what? I'm more scared of Bush's foreign policy than any threat from terrorists.
Also, the republicans spend like drunken democrats anyway, esp. on the military industrial complex. Might as well have the democrats since they'll spend the $$ on USA instead of IRAQ.
I am a fiscal conservative for strong america, but republicans aren't any more fiscally responsible than demorats, and don't control the borders any better than demorats. conservative != republican
The Pubbies better get some testerone and start fighting these despicable RATS. For six years the RATS have bashed the President and the Republican leadership, while the spineless Pubbie leaders stood idly by. Hastert, Frist & co. nice men with no spines.
In the case of Foley's replacement, they were voting down Foley's morals (which were misreported).
The Democrats were running against Rush Limbaugh and President Bush (neither of whom were in the race) whereas the GOP did NOT run against Bela Pelosi who WAS campaigning for higher office.
The Rat strategy will now be to take out seated Republicans by partisan witchhunt. Maybe now Ronnie Earle can bring Tom DeLay's case to trial; y'know, now that the election is over.
Bingo!!!
I've heard some on FR blaming the voter for the republicans failure to keep the house.
It's not the voter who is to blame, both houses of Congress failed to listen to the people who put them there.
Time after time we have watched republicans flub perfect opportunities on a whole host of conservative issues.
People voted the way they did because they are not seeing significant differences between the two parties.
Hope the republican party learns a lesson here. Run on conservative values, legislate conservatively.

That's the problem with both parties. It's become a big power game rather than doing what is best for the country. They no longer listen to who they represent. Think of John McCain. He had many, many voters ask him to vote a certain way on a bill. He said he would vote whatever way he felt like, even if the voters didn't agree. The people who answer his phones even argue with those who call if they don't agree with his position.
You're right. However, many of those who did stand for the things you listed, and campaigned on those principles, ended up losing. Not only was this a huge loss for Republicans, it was a setback for conservatism. The idea that if you run on conservative principles you win has been thrown out the window. Not only does the Republican Party have to regroup, so does the conservative movement. We have been derailed by the left and the MSM.
Very eloquent.
Enjoy saying "Madame Speaker Pelosi."
And choke on it.
That's spelled Weiner, right?
Wont be from me. I tried like he*l. 'fought the good fight. Time to accept.
This will be my last night here for a some time. The fat lady sang.
So now I move on to things I can have some control in. ... painting family Christmas portraits, catching up on reading, long walks down my country roads, enjoying my grandkids, knitting in front of the fire, talking to my mouse, cleaning my toe nails - and other such more important things from tonight to "some time" - starting with a Five Candle Bath.
"It's been fun & it's been real - but...."

During the Foley incident, Hastert looked old, fat, sick and VERY slow on his feet. IMHO, that stopped the momentum that the Party had gained in September. But it showed a deeper problem, which is that the party tore its pants straddling such moral issues as gay marriage and, of course, the pork issue. By refusing to act after the Abramoff revelation, by its inability to put up even the appearence of reform, you get a mess. So who do YOU want as speaker?
Well, let's just say that this person ridicules the slogans of others (like Hannity's 'Your a great American') while using a slogan of his own that does not even use his real last name.
