Threat Matrix: November 2006

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

"Chinese Crimes Against Mankind"
Charles R. Smith
Monday, Nov. 27, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The 2006 report from the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission is a call for action.

The report, prepared by a bipartisan commission of both Democrats and Republicans, is filled with example after example of China's war against America.

While few believe there is a war, the facts show an active and agressive foe, dedicated to defeating America politically, economically, and militarily."

Christians Targeted By Mobs As Violence Escalates In Sri Lanka

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

SRI LANKA (ANS) -- As fighting between the Sri Lankan army and Tamil rebels continues, Sri Lankan Christians have faced a recent trend of mob violence against Churches and individuals.

According to a news release from Christianity Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), the Lighthouse Church, Mawatura, Gompola in Kandy District was attacked on November 22, 2006, while the Pastor and a Church worker were inside. Rocks were thrown at the building, shattering the front window, and the Church worker was seriously injured when a rock hit him on the head.
“Ten days earlier, on November 12, 2006, members of the congregation of the Assemblies of God Church in Yakkala, Gampaha District, were prevented from attending a church service by a mob of over 100 people, some of whom were armed with clubs,” continued the CSW release. “Four Buddhist monks accompanied the crowd of attackers and anti-Christian posters had appeared on the walls. Only two policemen were sent to the scene initially, but they were unable to control the crowd. They had to ask for re-enforcements twice before twelve other officers arrived.

“Four days later, a young woman from the congregation had a container of black oil thrown over her as she traveled to the Pastor and his wife’s home.

“The Church had been threatened in a similar manner two weeks earlier. However, police protection was not provided despite previous assurances. The church has temporarily stopped holding services.”

The CSW release went on to say, “In Kandy District on 12 November, the Sunday service at Mizpah Prayer Ministry was disrupted by a crowd of 35 people who were accompanied by 12 Buddhist monks and a Provincial Council member. The church’s Pastor reported that the mob threatened to flatten the building if the congregation gathered together to worship again.

“On the same day, four members of the Prayer Tower, Anamaduwa in Puttlam District, were threatened by a group of men as they returned from a funeral. They were told not to return to the village and were hit with fists and rocks.”

Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s Chief Executive, Mervyn Thomas, says: “At a time when ethnic violence is escalating in Sri Lanka, this recent spate of religiously motivated attacks is particularly discouraging. We call upon the authorities in Sri Lanka to ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to practice their chosen religion with out fear of harassment by mobs and urge all faith communities to show tolerance and respect for one another.”

India: Church Worker Knifed to Death in Historic Church

By Dan Wooding
Founder of ASSIST Ministries

CHENNAI, INDIA (ANS) -- An employee of the historic St. Thomas Mount Church in Chennai, India, was stabbed to death at the church shrine by an unidentified assailant on the evening of Sunday, 26th Nov. 2006. A large number of devotees gathered at the Church for the evening service at that time.

According to SMV News Service, the victim was Jacob, 60, a Tamil speaking man and a local resident of Butt Road, Tambaram in Chennai who was managing sales of religious articles at the church.
“He was knifed following a dispute over the price of an article, according to police,” said the story. “The assailant had come to the shrine at about 6.30 p.m. and had picked a quarrel with Jacob. But they could not immediately identify any other reason for the murder.

“When the assailant began to attack him, Jacob took refuge in another room. The attacker followed and stabbed Jacob on the face, chest and abdomen. The assailant also threatened the shocked onlookers before fleeing.

“A bleeding Jacob was rushed at once to a private hospital in Porur where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Letika Saran visited the spot and told reporters the police are investigating the case and would soon book the culprit as they have some strong leads.”

SVM News Service also reports that the Christian Ministers Council of India (CMCI) and the Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) condemned the brutal killing of Jacob.

St. Thomas Mount Church

Built in 1523 by the Portuguese, a small relic-filled Church stands at the summit of the 300 foot high St. Thomas Mount. This is the site where Saint Thomas (apostle of Jesus Christ) was said to be killed.

For further information on the killing of Jacob, contact Pastor Paul Ciniraj, Salem Voice Ministries, http://salemvoice.org

Best Buy slowly figuring out the best buyers are women.'Hi! Welcome to Best Buy! Cute sweater! Banana Republic, right?" No, Best Buy did not pull a Freaky Friday with sales associates from Express. Not yet, anyway. But this rather uncharacteristic greeting, delivered when I entered the store last week, was no accident, either. Best Buy is trying to soften its image. It's easy to understand why: Women now outspend men on electronics

Best Buy refuses to acknowledge Christmas again this year - using WOW as their advertising gimmick to collect those profits. Not a penny will be leave my billfold or check from my checkbook and find their way to the Best Buy cash registers.

I agree with your take on this. Too many people could care less about death in Iraq, or elsewhere. They just can't survive without their toys.

Hubby and I spent yesterday going through our closets and clothing we haven't worn in the last two years got put in a pile that will be taken locally for donation directly to the needy. Some of the things are brand new, never worn, but will serve someone better who really needs the items, especially warm shirts, sweaters and jackets. We're also taking decorations we no longer use - so that someone else who can't afford to buy them may make use of them. It's not a lot, but it's the thought we have more than enough to share.

Homeland Security press secretary Russ Knocke also told USINFO November 22 that the department is "opposed to the concept of racial profiling," and its profiling techniques are based on suspect behavior rather than targeting ethnicities or faiths.

Hoping Mr. Knocke and his family get to ride the next plane full of chanting ME one-way ticket, no baggage passengers so that he can, by personal experience, identify with other passenger's concerns.

Weapons of mass destruction in Tampa

Snip: If you are still not convinced terrorists can get to rail cars, notice the graffiti the next time you see a freight train go by. And think if they can't stop graffiti how are they going to stop terrorists?

Polonium 210

Snip: At the same time as worries increased over the health implications of the case, questions were also being raised yesterday about the source of the deadly polonium 210 that was used to kill Litvinenko. In the United States it has been found that several companies offer polonium for sale over the internet for as little as $69.

So he can fine tune his "profiling techniques are based on suspect behavior" skills. Yep, sounds about right.

By keeping all U.S. currency the same size and texture, the Treasury Department has denied blind people meaningful access to money, a federal judge said Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Paul L. Friedman said the government has violated the law, and he ordered it to come up with ways for the blind to tell bills apart.

Iraqis, Coalition Working to Counter Terrorists’ Strategy

By Jim Garamone
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Nov. 28, 2006 – Terrorists and extremists in Iraq are working to destabilize the country to further their own goals, a coalition spokesman in Iraq said at a news conference today.

This goal drives the horrific attacks on civilians and fuels retaliatory killings in and around Baghdad, Army Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said, adding that all this is counter to the will of the Iraqi people.

“Al Qaeda, foreign terrorists and extremists do not want to let the Iraqis decide their own future,” Caldwell said. “Through two elections and a constitutional referendum, the Iraqi people have demonstrated they want to be a part of this political process and they want to have a representative government.”

Saddam Hussein’s rule crippled the oil-rich nation. Making the transition from dictatorship to democracy would be tough even without terrorist efforts to derail the process, Caldwell said, but he predicted the will of the Iraqi people will prevail. “Iraqis are creating a country that will replace the rule of the gun with the rule of the law,” Caldwell said. “And they will put criminals and killers out of business.”

Mortar and car bomb attacks Nov. 23 that killed more than 180 innocent Iraqis and wounded 245 in Sadr City, a predominantly Shiite neighborhood on the east side of Baghdad, reflect the al Qaeda in Iraq strategy in the nation, the general said. “It was indisputably a terrible crime against the Iraqi people,” Caldwell said. “The retaliatory attacks we have seen the last couple of days are also.”

Terrorists seek to control the Sunni population in the country, Caldwell explained, and they are looking to dominate Baghdad, the military and political center of gravity in Iraq. Al Qaeda kills and intimidates Sunnis who want to work with the elected, representative government. The group also seeks to weaken the Iraqi government and destroy faith in the democratically elected representatives. The terrorists attack the representatives and work to make Iraqis fearful of dealing with their own government.

Al Qaeda’s strategy also calls for attacks on Shiite civilians. The attacks in Sadr City are an example of this strategy, Caldwell said. Al Qaeda launches the attacks and counts on illegal militias to launch revenge attacks on Sunnis. This creates division along sectarian lines.

The Iraqis and coalition have made progress against al Qaeda in Iraq, Caldwell said. Since November 2004, Iraqi and coalition forces have killed or captured more than 7,000 al Qaeda in Iraq terrorists, including more than 30 senior-level terrorists who have been captured or killed since July, he said.

Between Nov. 14 and 19, Iraqi and coalition forces conducted a number of targeted raids across Iraq and captured the terrorist emirs of Ramadi, Bakuba, Qaim, Tikrit, Bayji and Baghdad, Caldwell said. The forces also captured two terrorist facilitators, a courier, an explosive expert and a financier. “The detention of these terrorists represents a serious blow against the al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist network,” he said.

Iraqi and coalition forces also are working diligently against death squads. Most sectarian attacks in the country are within 30 miles of Baghdad, and Iraqi and coalition forces continue to work against illegal militias. “In the past week, our combined forces conducted 18 operations against sectarian death squads resulting in the detainment of 78 suspected cell members,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell said that polls in Iraq show the people want the government to succeed. He said Iraqis are resolved on a unified, secure and prosperous Iraq. “In polling conducted last month, 89 percent of Iraqis nationwide agreed with this statement: ‘My first loyalty is to my country rather than my sect, ethnic group or tribe,’” Caldwell said. Only 25 percent of Iraqis said the country would be better off divided along sectarian lines.

Coalition forces continue to work with Iraqi security forces to build their professionalism, Caldwell said. More than 4,000 U.S. servicemembers organized in 430 teams advise the Iraqi army, police and border guards. The teams are necessary “to sustain and develop these forces so they can evolve into a professional security institution,” the general said. “They will remain in place long after we have met our goal of training and equipping 325,000 Iraqi security forces.”
