Kerry apologizes for "botched" Iraq joke

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. John Kerry said on Wednesday he was sorry about a "botched joke" that drew election-year fire from President George W. Bush and other Republicans who accused him of insulting U.S. troops in Iraq.

Kerry reiterated the target of his joke was Bush, who immediately seized on the senator's remarks to rally Republican supporters ahead of Tuesday's elections, in which the party's control of Congress is at risk.

Kerry said he was returning to Washington from a trip campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates because he did not want to be "a distraction."

A day after rejecting calls to apologize for his remarks, Kerry, appearing on the "Imus in the Morning" radio show on MSNBC, declared: "I said it was a botched joke. Of course, I'm sorry about a botched joke."

While campaigning in California on Monday, Kerry told a college crowd: "You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

Kerry's office said the senator had misread his prepared remarks. They said he had intended to say, "Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush."

Let's go to the videotape. For the ten-second clip on YouTube, he looks down at his notes from seconds 6-8, just before the "punch" line. Is he saying he can't read or he can't remember something for two seconds?

That wasn't an apology. That was an even BIGGER INSULT--as it was patronizing and demeaning since he STILL did not repudiate and apologize for what HE characterized as a mistake.

Once again (going back to Vietnam), that proves his disdain and contempt for the military.

Maybe he should ask the hero and God of the Democratic Party, Bill Clinton, to speak up and DEFINE and TRANSLATE what Kerry really said and meant.

These remarks were hurriedly "prepared" after he made his gaffe.

Sell it elsewhere; not buying. He said exactly what he meant to say.

Tell us that funny joke about a college education, President Bush, our troops and Iraq.

"What do ya mean, funny? Let me understand this cause, I don't know maybe it's me, I'm a little effed up maybe, but I'm funny how? I mean, funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh... I'm here to effin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny? No, no, I don't know... you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the eff am I funny, what the eff is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!"

Ahem...

"Let me make it crystal clear, as crystal clear as I know how. I apologize to no one for my criticism of the president and of his broken policy. If anyone owes our troops in the fields an apology, it is the president and his failed team and a Republican majority in the Congress that has been willing to stamp — rubberstamp policies that have done injury to our troops and to their families."

Hey, if these troops were really smart, they would have married some ugly ass bitch with money and spent the winters snowboarding in France.

He apologized for supposedly messing up a joke. He in no way apologized to the people in uniform and to the families who have sacrificed on behalf of this country and freedom!!

Yeah, I'll bet you are, Kerry. But not for the reasons you should be.

Besides, I'm not buying the "botched joke" crap. Your true colors came out (again) and what you're sorry about is the fervor it has caused.

Keep talking, Kerry. Just keep on talking. We'll laugh at your "botched" jokes all the way to the polls.

Wait until Rush comes on and baits him. He'll be releasing a nasty statement insulting Rush and calling him a 'doughnut eater' by the end of the day. He can't help himself.

Nor is it a botched joke.

It's an insult regardless of who the intended target is.
