Discussion starts at 8:42 and ends at 17:55
"It's not a sexual act" Webb told Plotkin regarding the "Lost Soldiers" excerpt in which a man embraces his four-year-old son and places the boy's penis in his mouth. "I actually saw this happen in a slum in Bangkok when I was there as a journalist."
Washington Post Radio's Mark Plotkin and Hillary Howard host a discussion with Virginia Democratic Senate candidate James Webb.

I hope you've all heard that Webb, in defending his pornographic and pedophilia writing in his novels said today on a radio show that he actually witnessed a father putting his son's private parts in his mouth. So he WROTE about it instead of reported it to the authorities? Such bad judgment doesn't deserve to be rewarded with elected office.
And Webb says that homosexual fellatio isn't sex. Reminiscent of Clinton, isn't it?
And if homosexual fellatio isn't sex, why did Foley only writing about but not actually having sex with young men so upset the Rats?

Once again, it's the Washed-up Post to Webb's rescue. Nope, no bias there.

I know I'm not going to please anyone with this, but:
My buddy married a Filipina, and after a few years, while visiting family in the Philippines, he was astounded as all of the relatives would pick up the youngster (girl in this case) move her panties aside and kiss her privates. He said both male and female relatives did this, and his wife explained it to him why, but for the life of me I cannot remember what the reasoning was.
He told me his jaw dropped and his eyes bugged the first time or two, but after she explained it, he'd just expect it as another aunt and uncle showed up and kissed his daughter.
I don't like Webb (didn't when he was SECNAV either) and am not bringing this up to make life easier for him, but South Asia apparently does have some sort of custom in this area, which freaks Americans out because it is so strange to us.
To: Peach
All the fake moral outrage over this Webb passage is utterly nauseating.
I am offended by your fake offense, mainly because I, too am an artist of sorts, a writer of sorts-- and I don't like the idea of the fricking republican morality police telling me what can and cannot be mentioned in a novel.
My reading of the complete passage tells me without question, that this was a benign passage added to color the story-- to give the passage a deeper sense of realism, an insight into the culture.
You do not have to condone what you read, but you DO have to acknowledge that a lot of creepy, freaky stuff happens in this world-- and when you're in someone else's country, the rules are different.

You are offended that I'm offended that a man running for the Senate thinks that pedophilia incest isn't really sex? He said this today on the radio.
Get bent.
Oh, and btw, I wouldn't read your other posts if you paid me money. But thanks for the link -- now I know who and what to avoid.

I understand what you're saying, but I think for someone running for higher office to #1 seemingly promote this kind of unacceptable behavior by writing about without giving context is sick and #2 to actually say today on the radio that homosexual fellatio isn't really sex is sounding just a little too Clintonian for me. (Remember that oral sex wasn't really sex?)

Well, I didn't hear the radio interview so can't really comment on him saying homosexual fellatio it isn't sex. But if he was referring to the custom of kissing the genitals--I really don't think it is. They aren't doing it for sexual gratification, it is just a bizzare custom they practice.
I'm with you all the way on clinton's inexcusable excuse, but in the case of the Webb book I'd have to read the paragraphs on either side of it to really be able to exclaim "Pedophilia Promoter!" and damn him.
To: Peach
Sad, Peach.
I have read much of what you write on Free Republic and you are one of the great ones here. Your comments are often intelligent, astute and reasoned.
In this matter you are apparently blinded by political rage. You will never be able to convince me that Webb endorses pedophilia by merely illustrating an apparently common cultural practice in a work of fiction as a means to color the story.
You are reaching. And your little taunts are juvenile. Sad.

"I don't like the idea of the fricking republican morality police telling me what can and cannot be mentioned in a novel."
Nobody is telling you what you can or can not include in your novels. However, if you run for office, your artistic sensibilities will be open to scrutiny. You are free to write about incest or other cultural phenomena. The voters have every right to consider you writing when deciding if you have earned their vote. In this country an artist such as Mr. you may run for office. In many Muslim countries you would be jailed or worse (Thank you Republicans!)
To: agooga
Let's get this straight. My initial post was one of disgust that Webb said on public radio today that homosexual fellatio isn't really sex.
And then this was what you said:
All the fake moral outrage over this Webb passage is utterly nauseating. I am offended by your fake offense, mainly because I, too am an artist of sorts, a writer of sorts-- and I don't like the idea of the fricking republican morality police telling me what can and cannot be mentioned in a novel.
So you're offended by my post. I responded that I don't care and now you're all in a twit? Get a grip.

This post is a link to that actual radio interview. So go listen to it before you post such nonsense here again.
To: excludethis
Grow up and try and understand that I do not need to listen to the interview to know that what he described is common in Southeast Asia and is NOT considered sexual in nature.
So go listen to it before you post such nonsense here again.
Uh, yeah. To you I'd say think before you post, or educate yourself on customs other than those that are local and normal to you. Some of us "get out" more I guess...
To: tongue-tied
I am 58 years old, and I have NEVER heard of this custom before. Excuse me if I take your information with a grain of salt.

46 here, and hadn't either until he told me of it. But then again, I'd never considered eating dog either...or fertilized chicken eggs with bones and beak...or rotten shrimp paste on mango...or monkey, deep fried grasshoppers, slugs and such. I wouldn't tattoo my face, insert little stones under the skin to create decorative bumps, or a host of other customs and practices.
There are a lot of things out there we would never do at home, but people in other parts of the world take as commonplace.
Again, I am NOT defending Webb. But what he wrote of is considered completely normal in that neck of the woods.
To: tongue-tied
A new defense to a sex crime on a child - Was it intended to be sexual in nature by the predator? Clearly, a new low for liberal defenders of every sexual perversion.
PS - Nice to know you enjoy getting out more to those places were such sexual perversion is common and not considered sexual in nature.
To: agooga
Then explain his thing with the underage "stripper" and the banana.

Here's the deal: all of the gross things you listed, foods and stones under the skin, etc. I HAVE HEARD ABOUT.
I have NEVER heard about such weirdo sexual customs. Never. And I am pretty well-read and not a prude.
