All the fake moral outrage over this Webb passage is utterly nauseating.
I am offended by your fake offense, mainly because I, too am an artist of sorts, a writer of sorts-- and I don't like the idea of the fricking republican morality police telling me what can and cannot be mentioned in a novel.
My reading of the complete passage tells me without question, that this was a benign passage added to color the story-- to give the passage a deeper sense of realism, an insight into the culture.
You do not have to condone what you read, but you DO have to acknowledge that a lot of creepy, freaky stuff happens in this world-- and when you're in someone else's country, the rules are different.
