LONG BEACH, N.Y. -- Captain Underpants may be a superhero, but he isn't welcome at one suburban New York school.
Three 17-year-old girls were told to leave Long Beach High School when they showed up on the school's Superhero Day dressed as the subject of the bestselling children's books.
Captain Underpants is a superhero from popular books that has battled, among other things, talking toilets and the infamous Professor Poopypants.
The girls, Chelsea Horowitz, Ashley Imhof and Eliana Levin, wore beige leotards and nude stockings under white briefs and red capes. They were completely covered.
Principal Nicholas Restivo said he knows they weren't naked, but it appeared that way, so he sent them home. He didn't like the way they looked.
Other students were allowed to stay at school. They were dressed as Superman, Wonderwoman and other well-known superheroes.
One of the girls said she doesn't understand the fuss. Honor student Horowitz said of the costume, "They're not see-through or anything."
The principal said the girls could have worn gym shorts or even called someone to bring clothes to school for them. But the teens said that they felt forced to leave school. They all went home.
Horowitz said she and her friends did not want to wear "someone else's hand-me-downs" and that they had nobody else who was available to drop off clothes to school, Newsday reported.
Superhero Day was part of Long Beach High School's Senior Week. There were other thematic days during the week.
Superhero day in High School?
That's what I was wondering. And, couldn't they have waited a week?
Lucky they didn't show up as GWB's....they would have been expelled or executed.
I dont have any young kids , so I guess I never heard of Captain Underpants. However if there is a legitimate superhero cartoon starring Captain Underpants they should have been allowed to dress that way.
I got sent home for numerous things during my high-school career and I don't remember any of them making the local news. Long Beach, NY must be one sleepy little burg.
The Principal needs a sense of humor. If the girls were covered up, I don't see any problem with it. Perhaps the Principal just doesn't like Captain Underpants - the cartoonist takes a lot of digs at the school principal.
Any relation to Jerome Horwitz?
Sounds like they were wearing more clothes than on any other NORMAL day.
It's not that uncommon for schools to have a week like that especially during the week of homecoming where every day has a different theme or activity.
Those girls knew exactly what the result was going to be when the put those outfits together. It's not unusual for kids to get sent home for wearing inappropriate attire. This is a lot of to do about nothing.
That outfit would almost pass Taliban muster.
It's a Spirit Week sort of event. Schools all over have them. It's harmless.
They did a very good job on those costumes.
"

So the girls were pyschic?
The costumes were harmless and well done. The principal was being stupid.
Super Hero? Maybe they could have dressed as a Marine or something. When the school sponsors something this childish for high school what do they expect?
Very inventive costumes. They did a good job on them. From a distance I suppose it could look inappropriate, but I give them kudos for them.
