Student Says Mention of 'Prayer' Enrages Professor
Agape Press ^ | October 17, 2006 | Jim Brown

(AgapePress) - "For Christ and Humanity." That's the motto of Olivet College in Michigan, where a Christian student says he was punished by one of his professors for making a reference to God in the classroom.

Olivet College freshman Jeremiah Bannister, an aspiring journalist, claims he was recently the target of anti-Christian bigotry and grade retaliation in his "Writing and Rhetoric" class. Bannister says Professor Austin Jackson, a Sunni Muslim, took exception to an essay he and another student had written opposing affirmative action and slavery reparations.

The freshman shares that when he was asked by the professor to voice his personal opinion on what African-Americans can do to overcome historical prejudice, one of his suggestions was prayer -- a response that upset the educator.

"He was very, very angry about it," says Bannister, "[and] said that invoking God in class was unacceptable; that it was anti-intellectual, that it was belligerent, and [that] it was completely unacceptable in his classroom. And he actually docked us 10 points from our grade because I invoked God in my opinion of what could be done."

According to Bannister, he was instructed to never mention anything about God or Jesus in the classroom. He says he has talked to the school about the situation.

"I guess there were numerous standards of the school handbook policy that were broken by the professor in doing what he did, but they are going to be addressing the problem," says the student, who suspects he may be asked represent other Christian students before school officials.

"I may also have to speak before the administration of the school on the issue of the treatment of Christians and the Christian worldview on campus, and the general feeling amongst many Christian students that we are being marginalized and even oppressed in many areas and treated badly."

Jackson, who is a doctoral student in the African American and African Studies Program as well as a full-time professor at Michigan State University, is an open proponent of communism.

"They start teaching as they enter a doctoral program. Loosely called 'professor.'"

Like everything else, libs have reduced the standards needed to acheieve the rank of "Professor" such that the rank is now almost meaningless. BTW, Anyone interviewed by my department who had the audacity to call himself a professor and did not have a Ph.D. would be laughed out of the building. Perhaps because I do not work in academia.

It seems someone needs to look more closely at his CV/Resume...

Springfield SSN 761 Commissioned - 09 Jan 1993
Boise SSN 764 Commissioned - 07 Nov 1992

Austin is ...., and served four years active duty (1990 - 1994) aboard the fast attack submarine U.S.S. Boise (SSN-761).

I recall a story about a National Guardsman in a Journalism class. The professor was an Atheist who stood in front of the class and tasked God to prove his existance by striking him down. He stood, eyes closed, arms in the air defying God. So the NG guy got up a drilled him in the nose knocking him down. He looked down at the professor and said; "God told me to do that".

Talk about a paradox in his world view!

Last semester, my Sociology professor accused me of being a "cultural elitist" when I told him that American culture is the best culture in the world.

In the 21st Century, what exactly is "American Culture"?

He is co-author of several published articles on the use of Hip Hop and African American Rhetoric to enhance student literacy and stimulate transformative social action.

My parents cured me of transformative social action by the time I was five. All toddlers have a knack for transformative social action that must be corrected.

Sounds like he was a Ph.D. student there who has been given an adjunct or graduate teaching position there as a means of financial support. Apparently, he's not a regular member of the faculty (yet) and is pretty low on the administrative totem pole.

Unless you're speaking Bugs Bunny lingo - than "Maroon" would be quite appropriate.

...the professor was a Muslim, not an atheist.

I believe that "true" muslims, reading and following their plagarized and bastardized koran, are worshipping Mohammed.

They're first cousins to atheists.

First of all, another jewel in the crown for this young Christian student. Anytime one gets persecuted for following Christ, know that Christ is there and he's taking notes. I don't think I'd like to be that Prof when he's standing in fron of the Great "I AM" one day having to answer for all of this.

That is brilliant.

In the context of American civil liberties (to write, speak and publish freely) is tenure (a vestige of the Middle Ages where no one was free to do any of that stuff) not obsolete?

They need to eliminate the tenure system. If they got rid of all the professors like this guy, the cost of a college degree would be cut in half, and the quality would go up.

Yes they do, but I suspect this guy's just a teaching assistant.

Also, if this was a rhetoric paper, invoking God might not be the best persuasive strategy, depending on the audience the student was asked to write for/persuade. If someone told you reparations were right because Mohammed said so, you might not be persuaded.

He is a "doctoral student". He is not a professor of any variety. He is not tenured.
