Investor's Business Daily ^ | 16 October 2006 | Staff

"...He’s not alone. According to a 2005 study by the Boston College Center on Aging and Work, traditional retirement where employees totally stop working may never happen for most baby boomers. Instead, the study suggests that 50%-66% of retirees will be vying for bridge jobs, parttime or short duration work for at least five years after retirement...

He was the typical govt slug who retired as soon as he could.

Hey! Let's not get personable, huh?

I took my SS at 62. There are no guarantees in life and "I WANT MY MONEY" out of there. Besides, as the owner of a small business, it lets me pick and choose jobs and leave the tough stuff to the youngsters that can take the physical demands with ease.

Bambi will be coming to our table soon. Bow opened this week. My son in law got one of those new compound bows that are about 24 inches long. The bow is the talk of the town. It's pretty awesome.

" ..... so they dont leech off us Gen. Xers."

I paid 123k in taxes last year. I've paid the max on SS taxes for the last 29 years. I've been working since I was 14. I'll be 62 in 4 years and plan on retiring then and I WONT need a part time job.

Who the f**k are you calling a leech, Boy?

I don't have contempt for them. I am sad for them that there are things that they want to do, but cannot because they did not plan properly. They are lazy and retired as soon as they could without understanding the consequences of that decision on their future years.

If you can afford to pay that much in taxes why do you need your social security check? I WISH we had that much to pay in taxes. I wonder how much your employees take home...

And yes, I am a bitter Gen X'er who's sick to death of people making their money off the backs of people like my husband and I and then bitch about it... Actually I'd like to see Social Security completely scrapped, and a little more societal pressure on the rich (NOT GOVT PRESSURE, mind you) to be a little more generous to those working under them... There is a huge division between "classes" of workers.

And yes I know I sound like a socialist, but that's the system we're living with and in right now. Perhaps if people shared more of their wealth as a matter of principle people on the left wouldn't be so gung-ho on taxing people to death...

Like you said, you've paid the max and make enough to live comfortably while the rest of us pay what we can and live check to check despite degrees and working our butts off on a daily basis...

Does anyone have a REAL solution to this problem that doesn't involve socialism??? Seriously I'd like to know because this is what is making socialism attractive to those in my generation and younger who don't see the danger inherent in that system...

Who has changed? The Boomers? Or the Economy?

The Boomers discovered that they didn't save enough. My older brother just figured it out--he's now working at a Wal-Mart.

A steady increase in the level of incompetence in all fields. It seems that if you want something done you either have to do it yourself or stay on top of anyone who is performing even the most simple of tasks from professionals to burger flippers.

Sorry. My idea of "typical govt slug" is workers who are promoted and receive their raises by years on the job and not job performance. They do no more than what is in their job description.

I paid 123k in taxes last year.

You need a better accountant!

I've paid the max on SS taxes for the last 29 years.

I've paid the max on SS taxes for 15 years.  The difference is that my first 15 years of paying into the SS ponzi scheme was more than double the rate of your first 15 years.  And in fact, my next 15 years are likely to only go up from here.

I've been working since I was 14.

I started delivering morning newspapers when I was 12.  At 16, I started working as a stock boy in a supermarket and paying taxes and union dues!

I'll be 62 in 4 years and plan on retiring then and I WONT need a part time job

At 20 years your junior I look to the future and see that it's unlikely that I'll ever be able to retire.  During the Boomer's greatest earning years, there were 6 people working for every person retired.  When I get to retirement age, there will be 2 workers for every retiree.  This is due to Baby Boomers aborting their children and because medical science has greatly expanded the average life expectancy of people.  However, the government hasn't changed the retirement age since the whole scheme started.  In fact, the people who qualify for SS goes way beyond what even FDR had in mind!

It's great that you've prepared but don't be surprised if the government comes looking to tax your nest egg in 15 years because a majority of your fellow Boomers did not prepare for living as long as they will.

Who the f**k are you calling a leech, Boy?

Intergenerational bickering is not just a hobby, it's a profession!

I wonder if any private schools could use a part-time chemistry/science teacher???

Imagine the tremendous boost to this country if all public school and many private school teachers were suddenly replaced by semi-retired older people. People who have a clue, and can also spell and do arithmetic. They'd vote the NEA out of existence in a heartbeat.

I think it's bad form to dishonor your parents; there was something in a book I once read, about that. That's all.

You're right, the Bible does say to honor one's mother and father, but what about those who do not deserve such honor? Should we falsely prop them up?
This is a discussion for another thread/time though...

Yes. Do not have babies until you are very comfortable financially and have the skills and experience to stay that way. Shut down the public schools -- which are increasingly being paid for by people who wouldn't dream of sending their own kids to one -- and stop giving people a free place to warehouse kids that they can't afford educate and therefore shouldn't have. Comfortable house should be owned free and clear before any babies. When people who don't have a spare $20,000 a year over and above what they need to live comfortably and save for retirement, go ahead and start having babies, they have just jumped into socialism with both feet, because that's what OTHER people are being forced to shell out to operate schools for EACH of your kids.
