In a Republic, the sovereignty resides with the people themselves. In a Republic, one may act on his own or through his representatives when he chooses to solve a problem.
How many representatives have we elected to the SPP or any of the 'working groups' developing regulations as supranational entities?

"Ultimately, however, the globalization of hemispheric free trade runs counter to national independence, bringing each of the participating countries into a converged economic, political, and military structure. Think of it as a grand chess play, where the average citizen doesnt even make the grade of 'pawn'.
Many of us have remarked on the erosion of indivdiual rights in this country since the 'free traitors' infested our government and have been corrupting it to meet their own ends.

Balkanize the United States much more and the notion of a nation of common values will be eliminated. It is sad to watch this happen.

It is sad to watch LET this happen.

Once God has determined who is going to endure to the end, he will bring the answer to all our problems. The America of the future is going to make the 50's look like a nightmare in comparison to how good its going to be for the over-comers who inherit the land.

More accurately, we are a democratic republic. And we've moved more in the direction of direct democracy thanks to our ability to amend the Constitution. But that's another story.

I've told friends that democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on whats for dinner. Another analogy is simple mob rule. We are a Constitutional Republic.

Nope, the truth is, the United States was established as a Constitutional republic. But we now submit to a corporatist fascist soviet(meaning council) style government through a weakness in the American people's ability to preserve their rightful government.

Now, if we could only teach the "free traitors" this simple truth....

Excellent and informative post Hedge...

In a Republic, the sovereignty resides with the people themselves. In a Republic, one may act on his own or through his representatives when he chooses to solve a problem. The people have no obligation to the government; instead, the government is a servant of the people, and obliged to its owner, We the People. Many politicians have lost sight of that fact. I think we need to send them a message in November.

Even during my school days, the 1940s and 50s, we were being taught that the USA was a democracy. I only discovered as an adult that we are a Republic.
I suppose the dumbing down of America has been going on for longer than most people realize.
God help us!

Its been going on since John Dewey brought humanism into the public school system.

For the title, the United States isn't a democracy, and people should recognize it as a representative republic.
P.S. You got a LOT of pings to NAU related articles, which you obviously did not even read (several of them had requests to respond if you had read). Trupolitik was also pinged.

The author is a Hamiltonian Federalist and doesn't know it. How sad. Hamilton was right, Madison was wrong. History has now shown that. But we barely got Madison's constitution ratified and it would be even less likely to ratify a Hamiltonian Constitution today. Too bad.
To: hedgetrimmer
It's a little trickier than that.
In December 1829, in his first State of the Union letter to Congress, Andrew Jackson noted that we had morphed into a broad-based democracy, and he asked Congress to propose amendments to the Constitution to reflect that. He asked for:
- An amendment abolishing the Electoral College, replacing it with direct popular vote regardless of state;
- The direct election of senators rather than their being chosen by the state legislatures.
His second request was finally granted in 1913.
