LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Newmarket Films set itself an unusual challenge when it decided to release the controversial faux investigative documentary "Death of a President" just six weeks after acquiring the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. But it might face an even more formidable obstacle because several major theater chains are refusing to play the film, which mixes real news footage with dramatized segments depicting the fictional 2007 death of President Bush.

We wish. "Follow the money, Jack." IOW, money-loser.
Don't confuse theater chains with Hollywood, there not the same.
Well, theater chains aren't really part of Hollywood.
Regal Entertainment Group and Cinemark USA aren't really "Hollywood". Glad to see these companies make responsible decisions.
"Hard to believe Hollywood is acting responsible instead of hiding behind free speech."
Not hard to believe. The film is a dud and with all the supposedly good movies coming out(good I mean entertaining) there is no reason for movie chains to buy this crap.
Plus, by putting this movie on the screen for all to see only helps Republican candidates.
Theater chains are not 'Hollywood' any more than Blockbuster Video is.
This ain't Hollywood, bra. These are theater chains. Hollywood makes the movies, the theater chains deal directly with the public by showing them. I don't know where AMC is headquartered, but it's not Hollywood.
Any chance the Republican party could produce a movie which shows a B2 pilot smoking too much reefer or having one too many and accidently dropping an atom bomb on Hollywood Ca.?
"But the country's largest theater chain, Regal Entertainment Group, has passed on playing the film, citing the subject matter as the primary reason. "We would not be inclined to program this film," Regal Entertainment Group CEO Mike Campbell said. "We feel it is inappropriate to portray the future assassination of a sitting president, regardless of political affiliation.""
Good for them! Regal has always been my favorite movie theater chain, that's why I'm glad that the theater closest to my house is a Regal theater (It's where I saw the great film "Facing the Giants" yesterday). It's very good to hear that they still have some moral decency.
The independemt movie theaters, like Marcus, etc., are not Hollywood.
Kansas City, Missouri, and no, that sure is not Hollywood.
the country's largest theater chain, Regal Entertainment Group, has passed on playing the film, citing the subject matter as the primary reason. "We would not be inclined to program this film," Regal Entertainment Group CEO Mike Campbell said. "We feel it is inappropriate to portray the future assassination of a sitting president, regardless of political affiliation."Yessssss!!
More from the article:
"Yes, it's controversial," Newmarket co-founder Chris Ball said. "It's quite a compelling political thriller. In many ways it is sympathetic to George Bush. It talks about a rush to judgment. In no way is it a call for violence."I guess that depends on your definition of "controversial" and "compelling."
This movie wasn't made by Hollywood.
The seats in Regal theaters are more comfortable then any other theater chain.
Apropos of nothing:
Ever wonder why Hollywood continues to peddle filth when family movies make more money?
In the last few years, foreign rights account for more than 50% of revenue generated by films. This number is increasing every year. So Hollywood now has another incentive (besides the idealogical one) to make and market anti-American films
I wouldn't read that much into this news. Maybe the movie simply sucks. Or even if it doesn't, the chains don't feel it will pull viewers in. Pure business.
I say we should all write voluminous letters of thanks and praise to these theatre chains to let them know we appreciate their taking a stand!! Besides Regal Theatres (which we dont have here in Houston), who else has said no to showing the film??
