Bill Cosby on Friday called on each American to contribute $8 to help build a national slavery museum amid the battlefields of the Civil War.

Cosby, who already has committed $1 million to the project, joined Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder on Friday in launching a new campaign to raise $100 million toward the Fredericksburg museum's $200 million price tag.

Uh Bill, what about those free black men that fought for the Confederates? How are you going to portray them? Hmmm?

Please note that not one black activist (or liberal in general) has done ANYTHING to try to stop the genocide that is ongoing in Africa.

How about a museum dedicated to all the white Americans who were passed over for jobs and promotions due to affirmative action. Maybe middle class african americans should pony up some money to compensate whites who were more qualified for their jobs, but denied due to the color of their skin.

Right on the money. How many slave museums are needed. The one in Cincinnati is dead broke and looking for $3 million from the city to stay open.

Very true.

We could accept $8.00 in food stamps then sell them off to the local crack dealer for $4.00. After we ccumulate enough to buy a pound of crack we could cut it and package into gram bags then sell it back to the crack-heads thus generating a large profit. Our museum could be built in record time!

You are a mind reader!! I saw the title of this post and immediately thought of the Freedom Center down there in Cincinnati. And there was your post. Once again GMTA.

A few days ago I heard on the morning show on 55KRC Craig and Jerry talking about how the FC has/is/is expected to bleeding money. Makes me wonder if the whole thing is just a sop to keep "them" (fairly) pacified.

"How about only people who had ancestors here then should pay. "

How 'bout eight bucks from people whose ancestors were never slaves of anyone. I'm considering suing the Roman Empire, all people of Nordic descent, various and sundry arabic states and just about the whole planet, since my ancestry was held in slavery at different times during the last two thousand years. All your money are belong to me!

Lincoln re-affirmed his strong support for gradual emancipation coupled with resettlement in his second annual message to Congress of December 1, 1862 and this proposal had five basic elements...

When Lincoln gave that message the Emancipation Proclamation was one month away from going into effect, so the Southern slave owners were about to lose their chattel anyway. And in a little more than a year the 13th Amendment would pass in the Senate.

How many we talking about? Legally blacks could not fight for your confederacy until March 1865.

The South fought for the issue of states' rights.

Specifically, the 'right' to own slaves.

Come on, it's a privately funded effort. Donate, don't donate, who gives a damn? But don't criticize the man for a cause where at least the man is putting his money where his mouth is.

...I have no problem with this. The Museum for the American Indian was long overdue in coming...

Hey...stop using politically incorrect terms.

Don't you know that the proper name is NATIVE AMERICAN?

In early 1863, Lincoln discussed with his Register of the Treasury a plan to "remove the whole colored race of the slave states into Texas."

There is a letter from Anthony M. Dignowity to President Lincoln where Mr. Dignowity presents his plan to reserve part of Texas or northern Mexico for free blacks but these letters appear to be unsolicited. At least there is no evidence that Lincoln ever responded to any of them much less supported the scheme.

Your source wouldn't happen to identify the correspondent, does it? I'm intrigued by the claim and I'd like to look into it more.

I'm surprised that he would propose sinking this much hard earned money into a building instead of putting it into low income school improvement or college funds.

Cosby has donated millions to schools and college scholarships, and has helped raise millions more. And when you get right down to it what is a museum except an educational tool?

And when you get right down to it what is a museum except an educational tool?

There are enough museums already that speak to the issue of slavery. I don't think that this $200 million educational tool has as much value as the $200 million would have if it were spent on the complete education of young people. The museum would only be a place for them to reflect on their roots, while the money spent towards education would completely change and improve their entire lives. I would give my $8 for that.

You just don't get it do you......The "United States" we got due to the "war" is NOT at all what the founding fathers wanted or envisioned. A Union forced at the point of a bayonet is NO Union..........Thanks to Ole Abe and his policies, we are STILL paying the price.

As an aside, I'd rather give $8 willingly to projects rather than have it taken forcibly via taxation which is ultimately what will happen. Property taxes, wheel taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, oy vey!

As long as it is a true history of world-wide slavery and includes in the history the Egyptian enslavement of the Jews, I'll donate my copy of the first edition, first printing of "Life Among the Lowly" (Uncle Tom's Cabin) to the museum.

Conservative estimates are 65,000 and they served PRIOR to 1865:
