The is what I got from my semi-scientific and flawed inquiry. I used the the Ancestry.com records for 1850. I used 1850 instead of 1860 because the 1850 results were searchable by race. In 1850 there was a total of 126,105 free black and mulatto inhabitants of the 11 future CSA states while there was 4,473,012 total inhabitants of those states. The ratio of free blacks to total inhabitants was 2.8%. That ratio might have risen a little in the 1850s, but the 1850s are not known as a period of widespread abolition sentiments in the south. So I agree that the source for most the claimed free black participation in the war would have been people freed during the war itself. But many were freed by the Union army. The Union army claimed the service and allegiance of many of the freed young men. And by the time the handwriting was on the wall, many of the white soldiers were deserting the CSA. It's hard to imagine many newly freed slaves would sign up for a service that the white men were abandoning in droves.

I used census data from 1860 available here. It breaks down each race by age groups, then differentiates between free blacks and slave. Even allowing for a large service range of 15 to 39 you just don't come up with that many potential candidates, only about 22,000. Where the source of this mystical 100,000 free black confederate soldier figure comes from, if not from stand watie's over-extended imagination, is beyond me.

As for mass emancipations during the war I haven't seen word one indicating that happened. If anything southern plantation owners tried to hang on to their chattel as long as they could. No legislature had the power to emancipate, the confederate congress didn't either. So it beats me where they come up with their figures. 4CJ tosses out stuff about problems with modern day census and I guess we're supposed to accept that it was far worse back then.

OK, let's say for the sake of arguement that the census undercounted free blacks by 40%. Even then that would mean that there were, maybe, 30,000 free blacks of military age instead of 22,000. All that means is that every single free black male of military age would have had to enlist 3 and 1/3rd times to reach your 100,000 figure instead of 5 times.

They point out somwhere on the web where someone can see an example of ANY confederate service record from ANY state and ANY regiment. It doesn't have to be a black soldier, any soldier will do. One would expect that someone somewhere would have put one out on the web. So come up with a site because I can't find any.

The fact of the matter is that nobody made anything up except you. Those 100,000 free black soldiers and their service records exist nowhere except in your imagination.
