In new ads, ski company says global warming could dry up snow during the next century...
The Aspen Skiing Co. hopes potential customers are ready for a snow job.
On Wednesday, the company unveiled a new advertising campaign for the 2006-07 season that centers around the message that snow and skiing will disappear around 2100 if humans dont take drastic action to slow global warming. Three full-page ads, which show a melting snowflake imposed over Highland Bowl, will run in SKI and Outside magazines in the next few months.
One ad portrays a certificate of death for snow. Another labels snow an endangered species and explains why. The third pretends to be a future definition describing snow when snow is gone.
The company is gambling that it can capture the attention and interest of potential customers through environmental advertisements.
Thats contrary to advice it received five years ago when it paid an outside market research company to help it determine its brand strategy.
That July 2001 study by a firm called the Z Group concluded that environmental issues were neither highly important nor motivating for our three target segments.
It advised company officials to focus on other issues that were more capable of selling lift tickets.
That is not to suggest that Aspen/Snowmass should reduce its commitment to environmental responsibility, but rather simply to recognize that its value to the company does not lie in its marketing contribution, the study said.
Company officials insisted Wednesday that times have changed.

Oh yeh, that's why I ran into a snow flurry in Vail pass on Sunday.
Fresh Snow Blankets Colorado Rockies
Slideshow: First Snow In The Mountains
(CBS4) DENVER With a record season under their belt, Colorado ski resorts enjoyed the first significant snowfall of the 2006-07 winter season after more than half a foot of fresh snow blanketed the Colorado Rockies this past weekend.
We have been seeing light snowfall in the high country for several weeks now, but this is the first significant accumulation in the state, said Rob Perlman, President & CEO of Colorado Ski Country USA (CSCUSA). "If this is any indication of whats to come, we are in for yet another fantastic Colorado winter season with plenty of powder.
North to south, ski areas across the state received snowfall this past weekend. More than half a foot of snow blanketed Steamboat Ski Resort on Saturday morning. Beaver Creek received six inches of snow, four inches fell at Wolf Creek and Aspen received two inches of snow over the weekend. In Telluride, John Mayer had to don the winter jacket yesterday as the snowflakes continued to fall during his concert at the Telluride Brews and Blues Festival.
The new snowfall kicked the annual race to Opening Day into high gear. For six consecutive years, Colorados Loveland Ski Area has been the first resort in North America to open with opening dates often in mid-October. While Loveland tries to make this year number seven, Arapahoe Basin has mountain operations crews on standby ready to fire up the snowmaking guns as soon as possible.
Its hard to believe ski season is just about a month away, Perlman said. With both Arapahoe Basin and Loveland preparing to make snow any day now, and Mother Nature helping us out, Colorado will be open for skiing and riding before you know it.

The idiots.
" It will never snow in Colorado again. "
.
They can afford to move the whole thing indoors if the Dubai arabs can have a ski slope in the Gulf.
" We are all going to die..."
.
That's okay, we'll have more skiing here in Florida! And you don't have to wear expensive winter clothing! In fact, you can do it naked!.............
:^(
Butters: "It sure is stinky around here."
Cartman: "That's why they call it ASS-PEN."
"Oh yeh, that's why I ran into a snow flurry in Vail pass on Sunday."
I'm looking out my window at Long's Peak right now and I see we got snow last night and more expected over the weekend. Damn this global warming!
So the southern Rockies would be habitable year round and the Canadians will be able to open up vast areas that were previously too cold to ski. Alaska also looks to do well.
Tell me again what the bad news is in global warming alarmist theories.
Another liberal " politically correct " marketing strategy.
Cancel your ski trip because it will never snow again, ever .
Ski areas in Oregon had the most snow that they have had in years last year. Some of the ski areas on Mt. Hood were getting snow fall last week.
Ski naked...?
Ouch !
