How Many Divisions Does The NY Times Have? Grey Lady Demands Apology From Pope

In a surreal clash of the sacred and the profane, the New York Times - that citadel of secularism - has declared in its editorial of this morning that Pope Benedict "needs to offer a deep and persuasive apology," for having quoted a 14th century Christian emperor who said:

“Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

The Times is only being fair and balanced, I suppose. After all, hardly a week goes by that you can't pick up the paper and read an editorial condemning this or that mullah, imam or ayatollah for the latest fatwa ordering the death of such-and-such infidel or the destruction of entire countries found to be an annoyance. Or not.

But the Times suddenly gets religion, if they'll excuse the expresssion, when it comes to the Pope. Oh well. At least there's one hopeful sign in all this. It was of course Stalin who dismissively asked how many divisions the Pope had. By its editorial according great weight to the words of the Pontiff, the Times would appear to be breaking with Uncle Joe. Might this be the start of a hopeful trend?

Oh OK, well they are not and never will be a Religon of Peace. How can they be peaceful when they react with violence over every litle thing? I really don't care. If Muslims really are peaceful or moderates do exist they need to speak up. I don't believe that there are moderates or that Islam in any way advocates peace.

"Did the NYT actually read ALL of what the Pope said ??"

Yes and they are ignoring it to provoke trouble.

New York Times... a sesspool of hypocracy, ignorance and arrogance!

Aye mate! And of course it has legions of disciples, e.g. The Buffalo News here where I live that just the other day in it's lead editorial called for the firing of Donald Rumsfeld. Yes, each morning they read their fax's from the DNC and decide how they can put their own particular spin to it. It is truly sickening. Add to that that they are forever finding reasons to plaster air-brushed photos of their patron saint Hillary on the pages of the News. Gag me with a spoon! It is really not easy living in this state if you are a conservative. Not easy at all.

What do you think of the The Prophecies of St. Malachy?

The claim is there is only one more Pope after this one.

And then the end times.

Having talked with several learned priests, I have found that the whole thing is false.

I just wish that people would report the entirety of his remarks-which are characteristically academic.

Read the entire lecture and several times because it isn't fluff. He basically says that violent coversion goes against the will of God because God isn't pleased by blood and by not acting reasonably.

He then goes on to quote authors who say that for Muslim teaching God is transcendant and not captive to "our categories or even rationality."

The real question that should be grabbing headlines is this:

"As far as understanding of God and thus the concrete practice of religion is concerned, we find ourselves faced with a dilemma which nowadays challenges us directly. Is the conviction that acting unreasonably contradicts God's nature mereley a Greek idea, or is it always and intrinsically true?"

His speech not only confronts fanatical Islam but relativism writ large. It seems that some in the Arab street have answered the Holy Father's question.

And yet Erie county gave us Jack Kemp. Buffalo is a blue city, but I remember when Jimmy Griffin was mayor and he had policies of a Reagan Democrat.

I understand that. What I don't understand is why the selective hearing most especially in this country. When the Pope issues statements on faith and morals, most folks relegate him to the "pay no mind" pile, but when he says something that may be somewhat political everyone freaks out. Either you listen all the time or listen none of the time. IMHO. He was speaking to Catholics. My thought is if you are not Catholic what the Hell do you care what he says?

It wasn't meant that deffie was not in her capabilities but that she received commentary disproportionate to her response here on FR.

>"Jesse also said on Fox that most lynchings took place after church."

After church, or even before church!

The same argument can also be accurately stated.

Lynchings have always taken place after voting democrat, or before voting democrat!

Ah yes, Jack Kemp. A real conservative! Not. Have you seen that he is going to support the election of Joe Liberman, also a well known conservative. LOL!! I met Jack Kemp a couple of times. Came off as dismissive of us peons who were not connected. Oh, he had some worthy ideas on the economy, but after that, well I was not impressed. Pretty good quaterback though. The debate still rages over the Lamonica trade however.

Oh well, we take what little we can get here in Blue Buffalo I suppose.
