Polish officials issued a formal statement on Wednesday, in order to announce that the country would make a military commitment to Afghanistan, thus becoming the first nation to address Afghanistan troop reinforcement desperate demands recently issued by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The country will provide 950 soldiers that will arrive in Afghanistan in February of 2007, bringing the total number of Polish soldiers currently activating in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force to 1,050.
Poland understands NATO will have to be more active in Afghanistan. That is why we decided to increase the size of the force, Polish Defense Minister Radoslaw Sikorski declared during a press conference in Washington yesterday, after talks with US leaders were concluded.
Sikorskis announcement comes shortly after an emergency meeting of NATO commanders in Belgium ended without producing any concrete results with regard to the deployment of additional troops in Afghanistans southern region, which is currently witnessing one of the greatest surges in violence to date and to which NATO military officials admitted of gradually losing control.
NATO leaders desire 2,000 extra troops to be deployed in Afghanistan, in order to provide support for the 19,000 already there, that sum up the military contribution of no less than 37 states. The organization also wants additional military equipment, like attack helicopters and transport aircraft.
According to a spokesman for the Defense Ministry, Leszek Laszczak, the Polish mission in Afghanistan will thus be the fifth largest activating in the country and will basically amount to 96 million dollars that would have to be spent by the Polish state. The spokesman added that the troops would be stationed at the Bagram base, north of capital Kabul and "will take care of all necessary tasks, from coordinating with civilian military staff to fighting terrorists.
Poland it one of the good guys in the WOT. It's old Europe that is the problem.
Viva Polonia! I especially love the Catholic Easter photos from Islami-stan. It's long past time that these creeps are forced to tolerate Christianity as we are forced to tolerate Islam in our country.
Thanks Poland!!!!
Funny how those oppressed by Communism value Freedom. Imagine that!!!!
Good pics.
Those're some fine looking troops - thanks for posting!
Thank you, John Paul II
I've always been a big fan of Poland.
Poland rocks!
I know I wouldn't want to be the one to go tell those guys they couldn't celebrate the Mass. Thank you, Poland.
The expression on John Paul II's face is priceless.
I want to move to poland now, they have state tolerance of christianity unlike the US.
