WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2006 — Air Force Maj. Jill Metzger, who vanished Monday in Kyrgyzstan, has been found and now is back in Air Force control, ABC News has learned.

"We are elated to have Jill back with us," said Air Force spokesman Col. Scott Reese. Local police notified U.S. officials that she had been found at 1:15 a.m. local time in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Air Force officials say she was found alone and appears to have been beaten. Officials say she is "coherent," in "relatively good condition" and is talking to investigators. She is also undergoing medical evaluation.

Officials would not comment on the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and said the investigation is ongoing

The news brought elation to Metzger's family.

"It's a dream come true. The most significant event of our lives," said Kelly Mayo, Metzger's father-in-law. Mayo said he has not spoken to Metzger yet, but believes she had been kidnapped and "whoever had her dropped her off on the side of the road."

Metzger vanished on Monday afternoon in Kyrgyzstan — a poor, predominantly Muslim country in Central Asia. Since shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, Kyrgyzstan has been home to a strategically important U.S. military base that supports operations in Afghanistan. The government is generally pro-American, and in recent years has experienced sporadic clashes with Islamic fundamentalists.

Just 10 days before deploying to Kyrgyzstan in April, Metzger married Air Force Capt. Josh Mayo. They had already bought tickets for a honeymoon in Jamaica later this month, he said.

"We were going to take Jet Skis out, have a couple of romantic dinners. It is very disappointing," said Mayo

Before her disappearance, Metzger was last seen out shopping with five others from the base. The group briefly separated inside a department store in the center of Bishkek, several miles from the base. They had agreed to meet a short time later, but Metzger never showed up.

Obviously, the woman HAD BEEN held against her will previously, but was free when she was found.

Thank you. The article sounds like she was dumped after being held. Not being held when found doesn't mean you weren't being held while she was missing.

You hear it all the time from the military types that get interviewed over the years on various news articles and shows.
I think even Rush Limbaugh had sourced this or talked about this issue before.

I've been reading and listening to issue regarding American women captured in conflicts/war for the last 15 years.

It was a major topic when the US military started to let women closer to the front lines in conflicts.

Nothing strange about this at all. Woman is by herself in a conservative and very poor Moslem country. She gets beaten and robbed.

Only difference between there and here is the thief won't feel guilty ~ ?

Seen it happen before. I don't want to say that women are more prone to this sort of 'flight', but, hey, they ARE more emotionally unstable, and I do recall several similar incidents while I was in a position to know.

Assuming that she just went AWOL, I doubt that much will happen to her, particularly if there's some medical diagnosis. At worst at Article 15, depending on the facts. The USAF just HATES to harshly displine its (few) female officers. They'll bend over backwards to 'save them'.

Had this been a guy, and it turns out its just a case of AWOL, his career would be effectively over.

I almost posted the official Air Force statement, but it's essentially identical to the ABC article. We'll find out details later, I'm just glad we got her back.

Thank God they found her alive.
I wasn't going to post on this thread - due to all the idiotic crap being said about this poor woman until I read your post.
I'm happy for her family that she is safe now.
Prayers for her to be able to cope with all she must have gone through.

I've had friends and relatives who have had to deal with having been raped. Yes, they are traumitized by the event, but they're thankful they're alive to BE traumatized.

I find the speculation, without a shred of evidence, that she ran off to be offensive. I have a higher opinion of our women in uniform.

I don't know if the facts of the case will ever be disclosed but, from what little information has been released, I suspect that she has been kidnapped and assaulted.

American women are accustomed to moving freely wherever they wish to go. Expecting to have that same sort of freedom in other parts of the world, especially in Muslim countries, is dangerous.

I am not sure if she ran away but I could be wrong. My guess is that she was probably kidnapped.

That said, why are you so surprised that a muslim male would have beaten her? Muslims get the clitoris of their wives and daughters removed surgically so that they don't ever experience pleasure from sex.

What's a little beating in an Islamic household?

Beaten and robbed is entirely believable (this wasn't reported when I first commented). Its the week long absence thats strange to me. Guess we'll just hafta wait & see.

Metzger was described as disoriented with some minor injuries; one source tells CBS News her feet were cut and bleeding.

I refer back to the remarks I made some moments ago.

She slipped out of the shackles, slid through a window and used her skill to exit a bad situation before it got worse, Thermopylae rules!

Insensitive? Because he expressed an opinion that a muslim male might have beaten her (and, hopefully not, far worse). Looks like you need to read the Koran. And no, don't read the CAIR version - it is written for gullible fools.

Ok fool -it has nothing to do with muslims or men. I was hoping I wouldn't have to point out the obvious. Seems you feel happy joining the bandwagon of insensitivity here. Shame.

Not likely she went AWOL just days before she was to ship home to the states.

"It is appalling to me that people can find this funny."

Gretchen, please note the posted article was altered from the original.

The original said she was fine, therefore the funny speculation you see in the earlier posts.
