WASHINGTON, Sept. 8, 2006 Air Force Maj. Jill Metzger, who vanished Monday in Kyrgyzstan, has been found and now is back in Air Force control, ABC News has learned.
"We are elated to have Jill back with us," said Air Force spokesman Col. Scott Reese. Local police notified U.S. officials that she had been found at 1:15 a.m. local time in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Air Force officials say she was found alone and appears to have been beaten. Officials say she is "coherent," in "relatively good condition" and is talking to investigators. She is also undergoing medical evaluation.
Officials would not comment on the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and said the investigation is ongoing
The news brought elation to Metzger's family.
"It's a dream come true. The most significant event of our lives," said Kelly Mayo, Metzger's father-in-law. Mayo said he has not spoken to Metzger yet, but believes she had been kidnapped and "whoever had her dropped her off on the side of the road."
Metzger vanished on Monday afternoon in Kyrgyzstan a poor, predominantly Muslim country in Central Asia. Since shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, Kyrgyzstan has been home to a strategically important U.S. military base that supports operations in Afghanistan. The government is generally pro-American, and in recent years has experienced sporadic clashes with Islamic fundamentalists.
Just 10 days before deploying to Kyrgyzstan in April, Metzger married Air Force Capt. Josh Mayo. They had already bought tickets for a honeymoon in Jamaica later this month, he said.
"We were going to take Jet Skis out, have a couple of romantic dinners. It is very disappointing," said Mayo
Before her disappearance, Metzger was last seen out shopping with five others from the base. The group briefly separated inside a department store in the center of Bishkek, several miles from the base. They had agreed to meet a short time later, but Metzger never showed up.
I hope this doesn't turn into a version of the runaway bride.
I've never met a Major 30 or younger. Then again, I'm in the Marines, but I can't imagine that the Air Force promtotes that much earlier.
The MAJ. Is an Avid Runner,,Once She Started Running For Her Life,,,,Well ?
She is a Marathon runner, regularly running and winning 26 mile races. I suspect it will be revealed that she was able to catch her abductors off guard and outran them.
Her exemplary health and conditioning may also be the reason she could have taken a beating and still be considered in good health.

"Sounds like she may have been abducted, possibly raped, beaten, then kicked out on the road. If that's the case, Thank God, that's all that happened! She could easily have been killed."
You expressed a reality that I often think, but rarely mention to women.
One of my beliefs is that, where there is life, there is hope, in other words, survive first, then deal with the mental pain.
I found the comment by her husband pretty weird:
"We were going to take Jet Skis out, have a couple of romantic dinners. It is very disappointing," said Mayo.
Is this from earlier - when she was still missing? (REALLY weird)
Is this from after they found her? (Still weird).
Thank You.
Maybe she was kidnapped?
Maybe robbed?
In those parts...don't they kidnap women for brides?
I'm thinking RA, early 1970s. By the mid-'70s, I saw a good handful of 1st Lts getting let go. Of course Viet Nam was winding down and the cuts in funding were to be expected.
Her fiance's reaction to her absence was:
"We were going to take Jet Skis out, have a couple of romantic dinners. It is very disappointing," said Mayo "
Sounds like a real sensitive guy?!?!?
It is appalling to me that people can find this funny.
She recently pinned it own. I think it would shock you how early Air Force personnel can make rank. I sewed on E-5 in 3 years and nine months. Others made it officially below the zone a lot earlier. Some Chiefs with college and war skills made E-9 before they were forty.
That's what probarly happen.
but why cut and dye her hair?
I doubt this article would have had the jeers it's gotten on FR if the Major were a male.
"A while ago in the Gulf war there were two women taken and this was thought to be the first women not raped in a military hostage situation."
I like military history and try to keep up on things, including this aspect of military history.
I was wondering what sources you are using for this knowledge of rape and POWs in military history.
I don't mean the two women in 1991, or the suspicious claims about private lynch.
One of the articles said that her feet were cut and bleeding. I wonder if she managed to escape from them and run barefoot until she got to safety.
It didn't say that when we were joking. The thread has been EDITED.
After about six years, major is a re-up bonus for most captains.
