Posted on 09/01/2006 8:57:29 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Five Years Later, We're Still Not Safe
-Full Story-

In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

A close examination of the federal government's homeland security effort shows that there have been major accomplishments since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. But it also reveals how vulnerable the nation remains to catastrophe.

Amtrak Train Stopped, Searched In Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Operations are back to normal at the Amtrak station in Northwest Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's office said the Amtrak Silver Star train heading from Miami to New York was stopped in Jacksonville after passengers reports several men aboard the train were acting strangely. Passengers said they were rummaging through bags and moving from car to car.

The men were questioned by police and released.

The train left Jacksonville at about 2 a.m., but the cars that were being searched by bomb squad personnel and dogs were kept behind and are still at the station.

The FBI and Homeland Security joined the JSO in the investigation.

Amtrak is calling the situation "a false alarm."(snip)

Eyewitnesses say five people were the source of the concern.

"They were going in and out of their bags and they were never taking anything out of their bags," says Greg Pitts, a passenger who got off the train in Columbia. "They were putting their bags down and they would leave and walk off and then take them and put them other places on the train."

Passengers told First Coast News 5 or 6 foreign men were acting suspiciously.

Takes quite a bit of digging to find the men were "foreign".

Testing, testing.

Outrage as Australian Leaders Tell Muslims to Fit In

(CNSNews.com) - Australian Muslim representatives are voicing outrage at comments by the country's two top politicians, who urged immigrants from Islamic societies to fit in, learn English, treat women with respect, and shun extremism.

An Islamic leader warned that the remarks could antagonize Muslims and lead to a repeat of incidents such as the rioting in a Sydney beachside suburb last December, when groups of youngsters -- described as having a Middle Eastern background -- fought with whites.(snip)

"Cites intelligence reports on terror modules
Portrays alarming scenario
Suicide bombing feared
Attacks on economic and religious targets not ruled out"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "NEW DELHI: Justifying the concern about the increasing activities of externally-inspired and directed terrorist outfits in the country, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said intelligence agencies had warned of a further intensification of violent terror activities with the possibility of more "fidayeen" (suicide) attacks.

Portraying an alarming scenario of the possible terrorist activities, he said that use of suicide bombers; attacks on economic and religious targets and targeting of vital installations, including nuclear establishments and Army camps, were very much on the agenda of terrorist outfits.

Presiding over a crucial day-long meeting of the Chief Ministers on Internal Security, the Prime Minister said that intelligence reports also suggested that terrorist modules and "sleeper cells" existed in some of the urban areas, all of which highlighted the seriousness of the threat."
