PRIME Minister John Howard today said he had no need to apologise for telling Muslims they needed to embrace Australian values.
Mr Howard sparked controversy yesterday by saying on talk-back radio that a small group of Muslim migrants had refused to accept their adopted country's values and had not learned English.
His comments sparked fury among some Muslim leaders who say they were offended.
But Mr Howard today stood by his comments.
"I don't apologise," he told reporters.
"I think they are missing the point and the point is that I don't care, and the Australian people don't care, where people come from.
"There's a small section of the Islamic population which is unwilling to integrate and I have said generally all migrants ... they have to integrate."
This guy is a hero, he deserves the medal of freedom or something. I wish more "leaders" were unafraid to speak the truth. Any moronic entity that finds what he said to be either offensive or hateful is surely ignorant.
He obviously needs several sessions of diversity training.
I LOVE this guy.
Absolutely!!!
Finally someone in a position of leadership is saying what needs to be said. We're blessed to have Australia as our ally.
Holy cr@p. Whatever Howard is drinking, send a dozen cases of it to the White House and 10 Downing Street pronto!
"I think they are missing the point and the point is that I don't care, and the Australian people don't care, where people come from.... they have to integrate."
WTG PM Howard! Good on you Sir!
It is too short a trip to drive.
Howard should make the libs walk and conserve precious non-renewable recourses.
Uh,do you think we could borrow him up here in the states.we have a bunch of pc candyassed politicians that really need his help.namely growing a set of stones. thanks in advance
John Howard and Cardinal George Pell are a SENSATIONAL leadership team!
He doesn't apologize? Doesn't he realize the penalty for not submitting is...the comfy chair?
Sorry. We saw him first! :-)
We desperately need a leader with stones of that size here in the states. All the PC-speak and dancing around the feelings of Muslims is eye-roll inducing. Those few who dare to speak the occasional straight truth are more often than not driven to apologize or "clarify" their statements.
I wish W would say the same.
Good for him. I appreciate his stance on this. As he said, that applies to all immigrants.
Islamic adherents aren't doing themselves any favors by playing the "I'm offended" card every ten seconds. They've got far less to be offended about than those who have been victims of their fellow religionists.
How about it Islamacists? Are you going to pick the 21st century or the 15th? If you're going to pick the 15th, go back where you came from and have at it.
Nice to have a chief executive who can advance an idea and then defend it.
I'm so proud of Howard I went and looked up some Aussie phrases. Is "I'm grinning like a shot fox!" appropriate for such a grand occasion???
Now, get on with passing the new immigration laws that some 'rebel' MP's are blocking.
