I love corn on the cob and frozen (thawed and cooked) corn; can even eat canned corn, but creamed corn just makes me gag. I don't know why.

Looking at what they consider some of the British and Australian terms are I do not agree with them maybe they a Australian but many of the US terms are nearer the British ones.

Never tasted creamed corn though it must be available here because I found a British TV cook's recipe using it today.

I think it would be in speciality shops. Her cornbread recipe was interesting if there is a New Year thread this year I will probably share it then as this seems the traditional time to have it with ham in the States

It's all so lovely, I think I could live there, if not for the horrid temperatures.

Friday was the hottest day, very hot and humid. I don't normally get sweaty, but my shirt was damp and wouldn't dry because of all the moisture in the air. It's pretty much like Wisconsin on a typical August day, only this year August has been surprisingly cool. We're having a lot of 75-80 degree days.

I think when we use it in cooking though more or less the same thing as applesauce we call it stewed apple. We use this for crumbles etc.

All fruit in Britain cooked that way is referred to as stewed eg it is boiled.

Eons ago, when the world was young, I used to make a spice cake from a mix

You mean, back when the world was still flat?

(Your references to antiquity crack me up.)

Interesting. Sad but interesting! I think it would be great if we could get a "Verified by snugs" edition of the US-UK weights and measures table.

Autumn seems to be a favorite time of year in the States for cornbread, hearkening, perhaps, back to the days when the corn had been harvested and more cooks spending time inside on those wonderful meals (where this still applies!) such as stews, chili, roasts -- things that take a while to cook and also heat up the house. Thanksgiving also.

It looks to me like things are getting ripe for a favorite recipes thread ... feel free to take the lead if you'd like.

Happy birthday (to Phil?),
and when you have time,
please let us know what a Victoria sponge (cake?) is.

The cream cheese icings I've eaten are sweetened, so they don't fight the sweet dessert they are adorning.

Carrot cake topped with cream cheese frosting is a perfect example of a most delicious combination of cream cheese icing on a spiced cake.

I just looked up a few recipes for potato rolls. Most used mashed potatoes, one used "potato flakes."

<<<You mean, back when the world was still flat?<<<

Eve and I used to discuss apple pie recipes. I kept telling her not to use sour apples, but NOOOOOOOOOOOO, she had to do it HER way.

In the White House, there is a wall that has pictures of how several administrations decorated the Oval Office. (That's not open to the public; Dubya doesn't want people in there, and I don't blame him. We're lucky he's comfortable allowing people into any of it.) My favorites were the two latest. The Clintons had a gorgeous royal blue carpet, one of my favorite colors. Dubya has blue too, but not as pretty a shade. Blue in general is okay, but I only have a few shades that I like a lot, like royal blue, turquoise, sky blue, and a greenish-hued blue that I call Andy like a little budgie I used to have who had that color on his belly.

Still, I liked the overall effect of Dubya's office better. He has light blue curtains that go well with the carpet. The Clintons spoiled the effect with wax yellow curtains that totally didn't match. A pretty lemon yellow would look awesome in the right room, but unless you had beige or something else exceptionally blah, you just couldn't have the perfect room with those waxy drapes. Still, the royal blue was beautiful. I'm guessing the Clintons took it with them so Dubya had to find something different. (Or maybe Laura was grossed out at the idea of what might be on the carpet and decided to get rid of it for sanitary reasons).

Thank you! I just love this President and I would be so honored to get to visit the White House while he is still our President.
