Yes - great with stew or chili. We almost had it with chili when I was a youngster.

***Is it a closed in one or open fire?***
Closed, Snugs. We have an open fireplace in the living room which we never use because it chills the rest of the house. But with the electric grids getting so old, we sometimes have no electricity which means our furnace won't run. So I bought a small woodburner for the family room. When we were without heat one below-freezing January for almost three days, we were at least able to fight off the worst of the cold. (As long as we stayed in the family room, that is. LOL)

Mine was moist but I could not get my head around a non sweet cake and cake served with a main meal.
I suppose it is your equivalent of our Yorkshire batter pudding.

My dad grew up in Virginia... so we had corn bread often enough. My sister likes it a lot more than I do, she buys the Jiffy mix boxes by the dozen and makes corn muffins mostly.

The cornbread I've always eaten is sweet. Not grossly sweet, but sweet nevertheless. Maybe if you tried a sweet cornbread recipe, you'd find you take to it.
The lady who added the whole corn kernels also would add yogurt to the mix sometimes. That kept it much more moist and made it hold together better.

It does sound like I'm less bothered than you are, but I can certainly identify. If I mention that I don't produce an abundance of saliva like most people, I get strange looks.

I like the idea of cheese but not too sure if I want bits of corn in it the creamed sort sounds good but I do not think we can get that in Britain.

Strange that I never have thought about there being anyone in America who couldn't drive except for really old people who grew up when there were not many cars and America was more agrarian. I suppose if you live in a city and there is good transportation one could get by. I've been driving since I was a teenager and I'm 72. I learned to drive on the farm by drving the tractor, then the pickup. My first "new" car was a 55 Ford. That was an awesome car. I used to drive that thing from Miami to Nashville and would hit 120 MPH on U.S. 27 through Fla. Ah to be so young and foolish.
Anyway, I'm happy that you learned to drive. You will need that skill in Iowa. I also predict that you will also be much happier in Iowa.

I took the teary eyed photo (# 31) to mean he was touched or moved to tears but in a good way...
I do hope that is the reason.

I'm getting hungry again...lol
Me too! it is getting close to my favorite time of year, what with the tailgating foods, chilis, soups, apple cake, yum! I make apple dapple cake with my dad's first harvest of delicious apples. It has a brown sugar icing and it is SO good with a cup of coffee. :) He is bringing me some apples on Monday, so my husband is looking forward to the cake. :)

I love cornbread with a bowl of turnip greens and a lot of pot liquor. We would eat that alot. Also I love cornbread and buttermilk. I know I sound weird now. :)

My guess is he caught the eyes of the parents of the soldier he spoke of. They were there and just buried their son yesterday.
