"The British Fertility Society is recommending women with a body mass index of 36 and over should not be allowed access to fertility treatment.
Underweight women and those classed just as obese (BMI over 29) should be forced to address their weight before starting treatment, the society said. "

BMI = [Body Mass in Kg / (Height in meters cubed)]
A 5'4" woman who weighs 170 lbs is 1.63 m and 77 Kg. That makes a BMI of 17.8
"I calculate that for a woman of median height of 5'4" (1.63 m), a BMI of 29 corresponds to 277 lbs (126 Kg)"
You should use this calculator then:

The BMI for the woman you describe would be 47.5.
A 5'4" person with a BMI of 29 would weigh in at 169 lbs.
Good post. My body fat is at about 11% or 12% but my BMI is somewhere in the low to mid 20's. BMI measures can be very misleading.
You might want to check your self smartass.
There is no ban. What part of the article did you not understand?
I'm surprised they are using BMI as the sole criteria. BMI can be misleading. I'm a pretty tiny person (5'4", 110 lbs), but by no means anorexic. That puts me at an 18.9 BMI, which by their definition would define me as underweight.
I'm very healthy - heredity was very good to me. I just happen to have the metabolism of a hummingbird. So I guess I shouldn't have fertility treatment?
The calculator does not state the formula it uses to calculate results.
I'm sure they are using skinfold or other method (weight in water?) for the proper BMI index?
Wow you've never been to the shopping malls on Long Island. Everyone is fat there. How many minorities are getting fertility treatments I wonder. The few that I knew were slim, professional women. A lot of the minority obesity is related to class and poverty. I don't know if I agree there'd be a lawsuit though.
The denominator should be height in meters squared, not cubed, according to the CDC.
Here's a link to one that works--
All a part of the suicide of the West.
I would assert that societal degeneracy -- like this example of promoting homosexuality and illegitimacy -- pushed by liberals, has a bigger effect in recruiting misguided people in Western countries into Islam than does the so-called Bush/Blair foreign policy.
Your argument might have some merit if the BMI system was screwed up to being with.
I agree, a very rib sticking meal, low cost and low cal.
I can eat plain beans and I will have an "odor aura" from foul flatulance for two days. If I eat some rice, particularly brown rice, with my beans, I could comfortably sit in church and not break a sweat. Nothing will instill fear in a man sitting on a wooden pew like a stomach full of gas bubbles...
good points.
The basic facts of a healthy diet (note... diet meaning food intake, NOT food reduction) seem far beyond the basic person's grasp. We pride ourselves on gym memberships and exercise, and yet I know of few people who do the work figuring out exactly what it is they are putting in their bodies.
Habitually, I stay beneath the caloric intake guidelines, that's just the way I am.
And STILL I have a hard time explaining to people that there IS a difference between margarine and butter, that bacon isn't necessarily a good choice, and that fruit eaten daily curbs the appetite.
Maybe we are all making incrimental changes, and I am not able to see the forest for the trees. But I STILL believe weight is going to be one of our nation's health concerns for generations to come. Where has personal responsibility gone?
Really? Wasn't aware of this...
Go to a walmart or a mall and just take a look around.
>>>900 calories isn't enough for anyone to maintain normal body processes. You were starving yourself.>>>
No kidding. Frustration will do that to you. Especially when you are overwieght and hear "diet and exercise" over and over. So you go a little lower. Little lower. Little lower. The scale isn't budging so you must still be eating too much!!
I just gave up and when I was finally diagnosed with PCOS I let it go a little. Still overwieght, but not obese. The medication and hormonal remedies have helped. Also discovered a thyroid issue that is being taken care of. But at least I don't feel like a big loser because my neighbor can eat McDonald's three times a day and be a size 8, while I eat salads and protein shakes and size 14.
Agree 100%
