Buchanan warns of flood of illegals
Washington Times ^ | August 22, 2006 | Eric Pfeiffer

Posted on 08/22/2006 2:32:39 PM PDT by VU4G10

Pat Buchanan says illegal immigration from poor and developing countries will overwhelm the United States and other Western countries in the next 50 years unless something is done. "We've already won the battle with the public," Mr. Buchanan tells The Washington Times. "The question is, when will the government respond?" In his book, however, Mr. Buchanan saves his strongest criticism for President Bush, writing: "Concerned about his legacy, George W. Bush may yet live to see his name entered into the history of his country as the president who lost the American Southwest that James K. Polk won for the United States."

"So Pat's favorite Pres. was James K. Polk."

Not a bad choice. From Wikipedia:

James Knox Polk (November 2, 1795 – June 15, 1849) was the eleventh President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1849. Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina but mostly lived in and represented the state of Tennessee. A Democrat, Polk served as Speaker of the House (1835–1839) and governor of Tennessee (1839–1841) prior to becoming president. He is noted for his success in winning a war with Mexico and adding vast new territories. He lowered the tariff and established a treasury system that lasted until 1913. A "dark horse" in 1844, he fulfilled his promise to serve only one term, and died three months after his term ended.

His single term in office is most notable for the largest expansion (in pure land area) of the nation's boundaries (exceeding even the Louisiana Purchase), through the negotiated establishment of the Oregon Territory and the purchase of 1.2 million square miles (3.1 million square kilometers) through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the Mexican-American War. The expansionism, however, opened a furious debate over slavery in the new territories that was resolved by the Compromise of 1850. He signed the Walker Tariff that brought an era of near free trade to the country until 1861. He oversaw the opening of the U.S. Naval Academy, the Smithsonian, the Washington Monument, and the issuance of the first postage stamps in the United States. He was the first President of the United States ever to be photographed. Scholars rank him about #10 to #12 on the list of greatest presidents for his ability to set an agenda and achieve all of it.

So Pat's favorite Pres. was James K. Polk.

Polk is vastly underrated as President. He's easily in the top 10 of Presidents.

One thing not mentioned in the bio was that Polk worked tirelessly through all hours of the day and night. When he died (after being out of office a mere three months) it was generally believed that he worked himself to death.

Part of the reason he worked so hard was his dealing with the Mexican War and negotiating the Northwest Territories with Great Britian--at the same time!

and since Bush is the President and from Texas...it's all(anything) his fault?? Jake...........just get real and support our President.

Tell me. Does your chest swell with pride when you read Bush's praises about a "new America"?

THE "NEW AMERICAN"
..........<

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. Re: "not obvious to George Bush or the Republicans in Senate"
Re: "there are people in this country who are clueless"

Just because other people disagree with you on what to do about a situation does not mean that the situation is not obvious to them, or that they are clueless.

Both the pro and anti illegal sides are coalitions of strange bedfellows. One aspect of that strangeness is that some on both sides know the facts and intentionally try to lie and deceive others. Other strange bedfellows on each side truly do not know the facts and are easily snookered into illogical reasons for their position. Yet, on both sides there are others who are both honest and knowledgeable about the situation.

Two "easily snookered" situations on the anti-illegal side disturb me. In our society, the way the anti-illegal debate is framed is for the most part controlled by the "smart growth/population control/anti-life" elitists. It disturbs me that too many people who claim to be pro-life are snookered into anti-life arguments on the anti-illegal side.

It disturbs me that too many anti-illegals who claim to be "small government conservatives" take a big government that if we throw enough money and manpower at a problem, we can solve it.

On the pro-illegal side it disturbs me that the socialists seek to prevent free market economics and upward mobility of the illegals. They agree with the anti-illegals that big government is the solution. They just think Lolita Falani (Pat Buchanan's Commie running mate) should be in control of that big government rather than Pat Buchanan.

I don't agree with a lot of what Pat says these days, but on immigration he's been right on target since the mid to early 1990s.

You're welcome.

Maybe I'm being too simplistic, but, from what I can tell Polk and many leaders from that era were primarily interested in doing what was best for the country. There was no political correctness and while I'm sure there were special interests, they didn't wield the power they do today.

It's not just the Southwest. Georgia (Georgia!) has had a vast increase in illegals, leading the nation in this regard, if I recall correctly. We have a new law requiring people to produce proof that they are here legally if they apply for benefits. But that doesn't take effect for two more years.

I don't believe for one minute that GWB and most of the population are clueless.

I don't know about the President and Congress, but I know a lot of people who know but it's not in their backyard (yet), and they just don't care (yet).

Look, I have no problem with PB, or his article, I'm just saying, it's not a new thing. People know. Congress knows, the President knows IMO. I'm glad PB says it, I'm just saying, it's "stating the obvious."

You know you agree. You'll thank me for this someday (a Monk-ism).

Wouldn't it be nice if Pat actually acted like a Conservative and a Republican once in a while.

I see that you are drinking the Republican kool-aid again.

"Wouldn't it be nice if Pat actually acted like a Conservative and a Republican once in a while."

Once the illegals receive amnesty and the right to vote, there won't be any conservatives or Republicans (at least none in any elected office).

Would ignoring the massive problem of illegal immigration and George Bush's failure to protect our border with Mexico make Pat a good "Conservative and Republican"??

He just has such a hard time getting past that dark, bitter stripe in his head to see things in a natural light. To me he seems like a bitterist* with some conservative leanings.

* Okay, so I made up a word.
