What Say Ye FR? Should a woman be allowed to teach Scripture to men?
Herald Sun ^ | 8-21-06 | n/a

Posted on 08/21/2006 5:51:49 PM PDT by Bob J

In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.

Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."

This news was posted on FR here and here.

It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.

What is your opinion?

..in its proper context, the Bible is talking about elder or pastoral leadership--ladies are not to be in these offices.

But a little Bible study--it may be straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel to say that a lady should not do this.

Though it may send the wrong signal concerning authority and headship, it can't be refuted with Paul's instruction to Timothy...

I think cripplecreek said just the opposite. He said it doesn't bother him one way or the other (my position too).

My teenage son has a female Sunday School teacher. I think men in the religious community are letting down youth. I would love to have him interact more with strong, Godly men. And I adore the female teacher, she is precious.

Where man looks at this and sees unfairness and "discrimination", God sees the fact that the woman, having the nature that God gave her, was known by Satan to be susceptible to deception, was confronted by Satan, was lied to by Satan, and sinned against God as a result of the deception.

Well, if women are so given to deception, and it took a supernatural being to deceive Eve, what does that say about Adam, who was deceived by an ordinary woman?

Why a new thread?

Combining the discussion from two into one.

Heh... no you just expanded it from two threads to three. No combining has occurred.

And since I'm a woman and I think you, Bob J are a man, I obviously believe myself qualified to speak to men on this combining issue, and any other issue I'm right about ;~)

I'll say this. It's not any secular authority's concern who teaches in a church. Or even if what they teach is Scriptural.

However, it is a secular authority's concern if terrorism and assassination is being taught under the guise of religion.

Divorce and remarriage is allowed biblically.

According to Scripture those who divorce and remarry are committing adultery, which not only a sin but one of the top 10.

My husband just said if I try to serve him an apple, he'll be really looking at me closely. You're funny.

Nuns did it in private school and I had no problem.

The forced accordion lessons are another issue.
