In earlier news it was reported that a Baptist Sunday school teacher of 54 years was let go from her position because "My belief is that the qualifications for both men and women teaching spiritual matters in a church setting end at the church door, period," the Pastor was quoted as saying.
Apparently in a letter sent to the teacher earlier in the month they qouted from First Timothy Two, 11-14 "A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, she must be silent."
This news was posted on FR here and here.
It's an interesting topic considering the current discussions regarding Sharia law and the treatment of women in Islam. Some FReepers were shocked and others appeared to support the policy based on scripture interpretation.
What is your opinion?
Why is this even in the mainstream news? A church is a private institution. They should be left alone as long as they abide by the law of the land. I can't see how any law has been violated by this particular church prohibiting this woman from teaching in a volunteer situation. Many religions including protestant christian groups, interpret all scripture literally. Other groups believe that scripture is a living breathing document open to interpretation based on the present culture. (Sound familiar?)
I Cor 14: 33B - 34 (NIV). As in all the congregations of the saints, women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says.
As someone else in this thread pointed out, submission does not mean being dominated. It means a voluntary acceptance of authority, such as submission to governmental authorities.
I didn't say that Adam sinned because he "lusted after Eve". He sinned because, at that moment in time, he chose Eve over God, knowing what God had commanded about the tree.
Ja, and she's not leading the assembly during worship services either, nor is she instructing men by preaching during Family Bible Hour (the sermon). The issue concerning the place that women service within an assembly only pertains to that of official church services, i.e., those official functions of the local expression of the church which the congregations has been called together as an group to observe.
I'd be interested if considering their opinion on that, what their doctrine concerning the headcovering is.
An example of what I am saying is when the disciples told Jesus that a person came doing miracles in his name and they forbid him to do so because he was not one of them. Jesus told them to let him alone to do his good works. If this person is teaching in Jesus' name and doing good works then who can condemn what God does not condemn.

I agree with you. It's interesting how this tiny, country church has gotten all this much attention for something that it's leaders have decided, that also happens many places, and is fairly unimportant. Oh, well. Sensationalist media. Nice title, "Crazy fundamentalist Chrsitian abuses 80 something year old woman".

Hey, I went to Our Lady too. Some of those nuns should be fired. Especially the ones who spent their evenings trying to think of new and creative ways to punish wayward children.
If you don't hear the Scriptures taught in the churches you go to, it's time to find another church, not fall in with those who change Scripture to adhere to their own human reasoning and political correctness.
Now that I think about it, I have never heard any human "argument" that improves on or negates anything in the Scriptures.
I'll stick with God and His Scriptures and live my life according to the Scriptures. Better to have the herd laugh than God laugh.

A few great women of the church come to mind: St. Catherine of Siena (proclaimed Doctor of the Church) St. Teresa of Avila to name two. They both taught men the teachings of Christ.
