Arrest Made In JonBenet Ramsey Case

CBS News Interactive: The JonBenet Case

(CBS) DENVER A man arrested in Thailand is being held in connection with the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, U.S. law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

Federal officials familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the man was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.

Details on the arrest are developing, according to CBS affiliate KCNC-TV in Denver.

Patsy Ramsey made the 911 call on December 26, 1996, telling police that her daughter was missing. "There's a note left and our daughter's gone," she said breathlessly.

Ramsey said she found a ransom note on the back staircase of the family's home demanding $118,000 for the safe return of JonBenet.

Boulder police responded immediately to Ramsey's call for help, and what first looked like a kidnapping quickly became a murder investigation, when JonBenet's body was found by her father in a small storage room in the basement of her house.

An autopsy concluded JonBenet suffered a skull fracture, and was strangled and beaten.

Because of the bizarre ransom note, and the fact that JonBenet was killed in her own home, detectives focused on her parents, John and Patsy, as their prime suspects.

Boulder police brushed aside many of the leads that came in, and dismissed the possibility that an intruder had somehow slipped inside the house and committed the murder.

The police chief said the parents were "under an umbrella of suspicion," but a grand jury did not indict the couple for murder.

Throughout lengthy and sometimes hostile police interrogations, both in 1998 and 2000, the Ramseys maintained their innocence. A 2005 48 Hours report found that DNA evidence ruled out the parents as suspects and investigators were no longer focusing on the Ramsey family.

The couple wrote a book, "The Death of Innocence," which was published in 2000.

They later left Colorado and had residences in Atlanta and in Michigan, where John Ramsey unsuccessfully ran for a state House seat in 2004. The Ramseys discussed their daughter's death during the campaign.

"We can't just hold our breath and hope the killer will be found and then go on with our lives," Patsy Ramsey said in 2004. "We have to move ahead now. We can't let evil win."

Patsy Ramsey died in June 2006 from complications from cancer in Atlanta.

Follow-up - another source says Carr lives in Atlanta. That is the same UNC grad I found. Not only that, but he also lived in the same Mass area as the Ramsey supporter. I'm not holding my breath.

"...The Los Angeles Times ran a spate of features poking fun of the excavation team until actual evidence of tunnels was discovered. Then the Times ran a brief news item, one paragraph long, dryly noting that "evidence" of tunnels had been found, and never mentioned the subject again. The local Beach Reporter covered the story without a blush: "parents began to dig with shovels, allegedly in an area pointed out by a nine-year-old former student of the McMartin preschool, who told them to dig behind a cement planter in the northeast corner. When parents unearthed several broken turtle shells and a few bones, they stopped digging and notified the district attorney's office."

Once the entrance was exposed, Stickel used remote sensing equipment to read the terrain conductivity of the empty lot next to the preschool. The survey was conducted by a respected geophysicist, Robert Beer, working with an electromagnetic scanner. The tunnel opening was found precisely where children said it would be.

Stickel: "Some of the children had stated there had been animal cages placed along that wall and that they had entered a tunnel under the cages." A foreign soil deposit was found near the foundation. Clearing the anomaly with a backhoe, they found the roots of an avocado tree cut to clear a path for the tunnel. The roots had been cut with a hand saw and torn away, and shreds dangled on either wall of the tunnel.

That's the moment editors at the Times chose to pull reporters off the story. All other news outlets rapidly followed suit.

Hi Rte66. good research as usual.

In a similar but unrelated case, on August 11, a DIFFERENT perp named Jamie John Carr.was picked up in Florida. Seems as though JOHN CARR is a common name for child rapists. Creepy!:

http://www.sptimes.com/2006/08/11/Hernando/Multiple_IDs_trip_up_.shtml

“Carr, 34, is a fugitive from Kingston, Tenn. He is wanted in Roane County on 28 counts of child rape and 10 counts of exploitation of minors.Carr raped two children under age 13 between 1998 and 1999, according to Frank Harvey, senior assistant district attorney in Tennessee's Ninth District. Harvey also said Carr possessed computer images of minors engaged in sexual activity.”

Allegations of secret tunnels
An excavation undertaken in May 1990 claimed to reveal tunnels under the McMartin Preschool. [2] A relevant quote from the summation is written as follows: "If the stories of the children were bogus fantasies, there is no excuse for the tunnels discovered under the school. If there really were tunnels, there is no excuse for the glib dismissal of any and all of the complaints of the children and their parents." The archaeologist's claims were refuted in a 1995 article published by the Institute for Psychological Therapies. The study showed that the concrete slab floor was undisturbed except for a small patch where the sewer line was tapped into. Once the slab was removed, there was no sign of any materials to line or hold up any tunnels, and there was no way for the defendants to fill in any purported tunnels once the investigation began. The report concluded that any disturbed soil under the slab was from the sewer line, and from construction fill buried under the slab, before it was poured. Some dated fill material under the slab was from the year 1940. [3]

Hmmm. Yes. Therapists
would know tunnels better than
archaeologists . . .

Interviewing the children

Several hundred children were then questioned by the Children’s Institute International (CII), a Los Angeles abuse therapy clinic. By spring of 1984, 360 children had been identified as having been abused.
No physical evidence was found to support the allegations. The mother who made the original complaint was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in the same year. Critics have alleged that the questioners asked the children leading questions, repetitively, which, it is said, always yields positive responses from young children, making it impossible to know what the child actually experienced. Some claim the questioning alone may have led to false-memory syndrome among the children who were questioned.

Bizarre allegations

Some of the children's accusations were bizarre. Some alleged that, in addition to having been sexually abused, they saw witches fly, traveled in a hot-air balloon, and were taken in one case through secret underground tunnels, which were sought by investigators but never found. Ray Buckey was described as having beaten a giraffe to death with a baseball bat in front of the children. When shown a series of photographs by police, one child identified actor Chuck Norris as one of the abusers.[1] There were claims of orgies at car washes and airports, and of children being flushed down toilets to secret rooms where they would be abused, then cleaned up and presented back to their unsuspecting parents. Some children said they were made to play a game called "Naked Movie Star" in which they were photographed nude. Despite a multi-million dollar world wide search in conjunction with Interpol, no child pornography was ever found during the investigation.

I have said for a long time I didn't believe the parents killed Jon Benet. The usual "blame the parents" crowd spent the last decade demonizing the parents and insisting Patsy Ramsey was a psycho who flew into violent rages when her daughter wet the bed and John Ramsey was a "pedophile" and molester, all of this being hyped without ONE shread of evidence pointing to the Ramsey's. The knee-jerk hysteria was amazing, even on FR people were still cursing Patsy Ramsey the day she died.

Can you imagine how John Ramsey must feel when his youngest daughter was brutally killed and instead of a public outcry of support, everyone turned against him and berated him as a murderer and molester without any evidence. It's the precise opposite of the OJ case, you have everyone convinced he's gulity when a mountain of evidence including the DNA samples, fingerprints, handwriting sample, lie-detector test, etc. did NOT match and did NOT point to anyone in the family.

It's a amazing John Ramsey wasn't suicidal in these circumstances.

The knee-jerks do indeed owe the family a heartfelt apology if this guy is proven the killer, though I doubt they will ever get it.

Even people are STILL quick to make assumpitions, throwing about the "pedophile" word with a suspect in custody in Thailand, again, without knowing any of the evidence. Most criminal profiles will tell you the vast majority of child killers and sadistic tortures are NOT pedophiles.

To the knee-jerks who went on a witch hunt against the Ramsey family, you ought to be ashamed. Next time, try finding actual EVIDENCE before you brand someone a sadist killer and a rapist.

The guy has admitted he was there. He claims her death was accidental...so the handwriting expert is wrong in this case. I think people wanted to believe the Ramsey's were guilty because of envy. I don't remember what I thought when it first happened. However, we had several children taken from there homes since this happened in this country. I have come to believe that the parents were innocent even before this arrest.
