Al Qaeda wants to build a political operation in Iraq to broaden its campaign against the U.S.-backed government, a top U.S. general said on Wednesday.

Citing intelligence mostly gathered since the death of al Qaeda's former leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in June, Major General William Caldwell said the militant group appeared to be refining its approach beyond bombings and beheadings.

"Al Qaeda in Iraq wants to present itself as a legitimate organization and is striving to increase its operational power by building a political base with a military wing," Caldwell told a news briefing. He did not give specific examples.

Zarqawi was killed in a U.S. airstrike on June 7 and was quickly replaced by Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, who al Qaeda said would continue the Jordanian-born militant's bloody campaign.

Looks like al Qaeda sees the future of Iraq and has decided to work through its democracy.

---the militant group appeared to be refining its approach beyond bombings and beheadings---

Soon, according to leftist dogma, they'll be just another political party like Hamas and Hezbollah, and we'll have to accept them or we'll be tunnel vision right wing fanatics.

I was thinking that they see the present in Lebanon with Hezbollah and is throwing another monkey-wrench in the works of that messed-up backwards culture ever producing anything resembling a civilized society.

To: jmc1969; All

Hamas, PLO, hisbullah, etc, etc

The apparent genesis of political 'parties' such as in the more volital regions/countries in the middle east apparently require that you:
1. terrorize and kill people from other countries - allah is wise
2. terrorize and kill people in your own country to the point where they feel as though if they disagree with you, you will kill them - allah is powerful
3. inculcate a belief system in the poor people you have access to that is based upon hatred of 'infidels', and educate the youth as young as possible to hate - allah is forgiving
4. hide behind some semblance of a religion to minimize attacks upon you - because you have 'beliefs' - allah is all knowing
5. take advantage of ignorant bleeding heart liberal types that can be found practically in every corner of the planet to plead mercy for 'your oppressed people' - allah is loving

jeez - then you just need a neeto name

Qajen Fatah ?

It's why I've always ignored the leftists who say "we support the insurgency". Good. Let them venture a candidate.

Unfortunately those same leftists don't give a damn about elections and would love to see revolution in America too.
