The military believed that plans by the Abu Sayyaf to conduct bombings in the country were averted with the discovery of the biggest camp of the group in Jolo, Sulu, ABS-CBN News reported Friday.An exclusive report of late night newscast Bandila said that as early as July, the military had already planned to raid the camp of the Abu Sayyaf in the jungles of Jolo after receiving information from residents living nearby.
The camp was being used as training ground for Abu Sayyaf members and was once the hiding place of leaders Abu Sulayman, Khadaffy Janjalani and Radulan Sahiron.
Two leaders of the Jemaah Islamiah identified as Omar Patek and Dulmatin believed to be holed up together with the Abu Sayyaf were teaching the group how to make bombs, including liquid bombs, which they learned from al Qaeda.The two are bomb experts and were tagged as the masterminds in the bombings in Bali, Indonesia.
"We may have pre-empted the possible launching of some terror activities here in Manila," National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales told reporters after Malacañan convened the government's anti-terrorism task force Friday in the wake of an alleged plot in Britain to blow up US-bound passenger planes.
"When the operations started on Jolo, there was ongoing training in explosives. They were assembling explosives there."
Abu Sayyaf, the smallest of four Muslim rebel groups in Mindanao, is blamed for a number of deadly attacks, including the bombing of a ferry near Manila in 2004 that killed more than 100 people.
After four days of air and ground assaults, soldiers and Marines overrun an Abu Sayyaf jungle camp in early August and said they seized bomb-making materials and equipment.
Bandila reporter Ces Drilon said US bomb experts will examine several electronic circuits retrieved from the camp
Despite numerous offensives on Jolo island, including one with 5,000 troops in 2004, Abu Sayyaf leaders and their foreign colleagues have eluded capture.
Muslim separatists in Mindanao have been seeking greater independence since the 1960s in a conflict that has killed more than 120,000 people and stunted development of the resource-rich area.
